Idiot. Should have stolen a phone instead of using his mother's. He doesn't deserve higher education.

they are looking to make an example of him, maybe. "See what happens when you cheat?"

I don't think its overboard. I think people are too lenient on cheating nowadays =/

doesn't suprise me he got arrested, they take education VERY seriously over there

hell here in america we are WAY damn too lenient with cheating

reading the story:no wonder they were desperate to get him, he was exposing test questions to TONS of people, which would of caused a lot of problems for those universities

Would not be that surprised if this proved accurate. I can understand the situation and the reaction to it , even if my first reaction was that it seem heavy handed.

couple of things though. first a teenager that cheated on a university entrance exam was Japan's most wanted criminal? ( admittedly for a short time) I know they take education very serious but come on surely there are real criminals that are more deserving of police resources devoted to tracking them down.

second I got to wonder if in the US there would every be this huge of a reaction to similar cheating, not that i would be much surprised if it has happened already here.

The Japanese police force would be utterly overwhelmed if they decided to pursue every pedophile in the country.

    ^lol

seriously though, Japan has one of the lowest crime rates around. The only things that generally happen are the random crazy person. Owning a gun outside of the police is illegal, so that tends to help.

    think about it:
    cheating destroys a university's credibility.
if students cheat enough, the university cannot prove that they have academic standards that are competitive and enrollment drops.

actually, it's no different than that scandal with the NBA referee that fixed games with his bad officiating.
for years to come, no one will be able to say those games he officiated were fair and it leaves the rest of the game damaged.

it's no longer an issue where cheating is just hurting yourself. it hurts countless others.

it costs money, reputation and puts the value of one's education in doubt.

i hope they throw a library, not the book at this cheat.

(and deny the honor of ritualistic suicide, too.)

I remember my biology teacher in high school. If he caught you cheating while taking a test, he will take your test and rip it. I've seen him do it.

At my university they fail you out of the class entirely and if it happens again they give you the boot.

This. Universities are made and broken on their academic reputations and will do just about anything to keep it intact.

The academic system in Japan, as well as Taiwan and some other Asian countries are absolutely tight fisted when it comes to this kind of thing.

The university entrance exam is often a make or break for a student and their future career.

Think SAT/ACT/IB on steroids, meth, and energy drinks. It's that serious for the kids of those countries. Everyone in the country is trying to get into the best school and the exam is the key. It's not like the US were universities are a plenty and you can have a huge list of choices of where you want to go.

Academics is just absolutely nuts in places like Japan and Taiwan. Many kids commit suicide because they can't take the pressure.

I think criminal charges are a bit harsh. He should be denied entrance into any school.
