Any Autobot with Prime at the end of their name - it's like a "godstatus"
Fort Max - bigger than city big
    Metroplex - city big
    Omega Supreme - big
Preceptor (IDW) - more or less "scary" and skilled.
Springer (IDW) - he leads the effing Wreckers—nuff said.
Drift (IDW) - swordsmanship skills and the Sword of Omens slung across his back.
    Blurr (IDW) - strength = mass x velocity(squared)
Kup (IDW) - takes no shit and is a meth addict
Roadbuster (IDW) - the dude was a heavily armored tank thing.
Ultra Magnus (IDW) - Gerard Butler from Law Abiding Citizen
Hot Rod (IDW) - born chosen leader, brilliant tactician.
Mirage (IDW) - name and ability kinda do the trick.

Buzzsaw. Who else can say they beat Omega Supreme?

    I know he's a Decepticon but he one-hit KO'ed OS.

And yet he gets less love than Laserbeak. Buzzsaw sounds more like a badass name.

G1 only USA... I don't do other continuities.

By the Tech Specs bios, Optimus prime is easily the strongest non-giant Transformer... period. However, that's mainly due to his listed lifting limit of 4 000 000 lbs, which I'm pretty much convinced is a typo. For one thing, who ever writes out "4 000 000 lbs" and not "4 million pounds". Secondly, that's stupid overpowered, even for a robot superman like Optimus. I've always taken the approach that there's one too many zeroes, and that it was intended to be 400 000 lbs (or roughly 200 tons). This makes him ALMOST as strong as a combiner, but not quite, and just over twice as strong as Brawn, who was the "second strongest Autobot" in 1984. Incidentally, average strength for a combiner is around 250-300 tons (barring Piranacon, who is kind of stupidly overpowered).

So with Optimus and his 200 tons being roughtly the high-water mark for strong Autobots, I'd say that the other guys that fall into that category would be as follows...

-Grimlock: for a long time, he was the only other Autobot with 10 Strength.
-Rodimus: we can assume he matches Optimus at least
-Fortress Maximus (Marvel/IDW): not a cityformer... just big and tough
-Ultra Magnus: despite only carrying a 9 in his Techspecs, in most fictions, he seems to be up there with the "leader class" characters. Maybe he's just on the cusp.

Honourable mention also goes to Hardhead, who is one of the very few 10 strength (non-giant) Autobots in G1. 1987 had an unusually high number of characters with maxed out stats, which may be a bit suspect, but there it is...

Once you step a notch down into the "9" category, there are TONS of guys who are really really strong... but not that strong.

I agree. If I couldn't change my name to Joe Kickass, Buzzsaw is a close second.

That's a pretty good list of G1 strong guys, though I'd suggest some corrections...

Broadside, Hoist, Blaster and Grapple are only in the 8 range for Strength, matching them with Whirl, Roadbuster, Scattershot and Twin Twist, along with surprising company such as Gears, Steeljaw, and Ramhorn.

Kup is listed as 9 in 1986, but all the movie characters seem to have been exaggerated that year, and most of them were taken down a notch in '87 when re-released as Targetmasters (Kup becomes an 8).

Meanwhile, you missed a few upper level (9) guys, like Hotspot, Warpath, Wide Load and Pipes, who are all described as being among the strongest Autobots.

Jetfire actually isn't very strong. At 6 Strength, he's weaker than all the Seekers. Like with Silverbolt, it seems that for Autobot flyers, size does not equal strength.

Yeah, the way Springer's bio is written, he sounds like a HULK (sort of literally, being green and with his leaping ability). He's a 9, stats-wise, but his graph spikes halfway to 10. A lot of the movie characters were hyped that year, but based on the wording of his bio, I'd give him an honorary 10. :)
