The common criticism about G1 Starscream is that he was always shallow/one-dimensional, and he never had any special reason for wanting to betray Megatron.

Which leads to my main subject:

I've heard that the Movieverse Comics---before Bay made the epicfail sequels that turned Starscream into a pointless/useless wuss who never showed a single hint of treachery---I already know the comics at least succeeded in keeping him in-character while still being incredibly badass, but apparently, they were actually creating an idea behind his character, giving him complex reasons for his treacherousness.

If anybody here has read the Movie-Comics, can you elaborate on how the Comics were portraying Starscream, and what exactly was the depth that they were trying to give his character? Motives/Intentions? ETC.

The prequel comics pretty much portrayed Starscream the same in the later comics. The only thing that was different was his design. It was more based n the G1 design, but had that modern look.

Reign of Starscream was one of my favorite comics EVER. His portrayal on that was a thing of beauty. His intellect was just so compelling and I wish we would have seen that in a larger role in the films.

I'd like to point out that Starscream is supposed to be a coward by design. I really loved the way the character was portrayed in the ROTF game. He seemed more evil then Megatron and definitely seemed to have a lot of interesting traits. True the movies didn't have a super overload of chracter development--with the exception of Optimus and Bumblebee anyway.

I didn't have much of a problem with his character in DOTM and ROTF aside from the constant spitting and I would have liked the ROTF game voice instead of the one used for ROTF and DOTM.

ROTF and DOTM didn't ruin his character, it made him Starscream. Movie one Starscream was some random "badass" jet guy with a "cool" voice. I'm sure ROS Starscream was great and all, but the movies decided to not go for that. Oh well. At least that schmuck in Movie 1 was replaced by an actual Starscream without some synthesized, overly growly bullshit voice.

    That's our Screamer all right.

In ROTF he led the final assault personally. He only got beat up by Optimus Prime. Optimus Prime.

In DOTM his death was due to his own arrogance. Before then he nearly blew up the Bots and stopped incoming help in the air while Soundwave and Shocks fought the ground battle.

    I wouldn't call this a "fail" character.

Oh, but his voice wasn't tough and cool anymore! And he was cowardly! And he got killed by a human! Doesn't matter if said human had a cybertronian bomb and the element of surprise!

I laughed my ass off when he got pwned by Sam. Reign of Starscream sounds cool. I've read the wiki, and apparently his first act of leadership was to reanimate his comrades and set them loose on the Autobots.

All of his toys are awesome too, even the Legend. I really don't understand why people are offended that he's triangular. Makes for amazing transformations.

Charlie Adler actually did his voice in all three movies. Though he only had like one or two english lines in 1.

And I know it's heresy to many, but Charlie Adler is my favorite Scream voice after Steve Blum. Chris Latta was better as Cobra Commander. Though maybe that's the Jem fan in me talking ...

Oh I know. That's another reason why I liked the ROTF/DOTM voice. Adler got to show his true talent rather than being covered up by stupid voice effects.

By the same logic, that makes Laserbeak a "fail" character because Sam got him killed.

The same Laserbeak that pretty much was the most effective and efficient Decepticon in the entire trilogy and decidedly less "fail" than even Soundwave.

Just wanted to point that out.
