So the ashes come back down? That's kinda lame. I guess I always assumed that when they shot them into space they stayed.

Wow, this is funny/sad - I was watching the TNG episode Relics yesterday - the one where the Enterprise D finds Scotty in transporter stasis. Link. Great episode.
Great. Throw more junk up into space. Nothing like putting astronaughts, shuttles, & the space station in more danger by adding to the garbage orbiting Earth. A tiny rock can punch right through the station/shuttle. They beter make sure whatever they take up is guaranteed to burn up in the atmosphere soon after it is taken up.
Cremation produces an EXTREMELY fine particulate ash. It doesn't have the mass to pierce a space shuttle, nor does it have the volume to create a hole any larger than the nearly-nonexistant pores in the spacesuit's inner liner.
