For many different reasons (price, lack of good figures, etc), collectors are forced to make due with stand-in figures in order to complete their collections. I recently ran into this with DOTM, trying to get my Autobot and Decepticon teams completed, and have resorted to a few stand-ins.

First, a quick note: Stand-in can refer to a figure from one line representing themselves in another line (for example, Animated Arcee standing in for Classic Arcee). It can also refer to a toy being repainted/modded/transformed differently to represent a character (for example, the many gold-painted Sideswipes used to make movie Sunstreaker).

Currently I am going for two stand-ins: I am using Tcracker's Topspin alt transformation and some minor paint apps to turn Movie Armored Topspin into Armored Leadfoot. Also, I am considering doing some minor modding to ROTF Swerve to turn him into DOTM Dino's standin.

I use Energon Arcee as my classics stand in. Also have NYCC Pink Arcee in a different shelf with my 86 Movie cast as my classics stand in.

Legion Vehicon as my Classics Blackjack.

... it's one of the figures I had as a kid, okay?

... that's an interesting list. At least the Classics Blackout and Classics Vortex bit...

You did remind me that my WfC figures technically aren't G1 characters, so I guess they count, too.

Off the top of my head...

    - ROTF Dlx Brawn as Roadbuster
    - DOTM Vgr Skyhammer as Whirl
    - DOTM Dlx Track Battle Roadbuster as Backstreet
    - PCC Smolder as Hosehead
    - RiD Wedge as Scoop
    - DOTM Specialist Ratchet as Fixit
    - PCC Leadfoot as Slapdash
    - ROTF Mindwipe as Mindwipe
    - ROTF Skystalker as Vorath
    - DOTM Quickstrike as Charger
    - HFTD Hailfire as Gutcruncher
    - HFTD Lugnut as G2 Ransack
    - HFTD Terradive as Hooligan

For me, a figure has to hit multiple points of recognition to qualify as a stand-in in my collection. Colors are huge, but design elements (such as a cannon on a shoulder, head shape, etc.) also factor in.

Assuming you are trying to make your collection a specific theme. I personally will never need a "stand-in" because I'm not looking to put together something like the entire G1 Season One cast, for example. My collection is Transformers, plain and simple.

... huh. Someone else with Stand-ins for the Sports Car Patrol? Weird.

I forgot Universe Makeshift as my Roadhugger. Though he also makes a good Full-Tilt or a fantastic "Menasor's Carbra" is you're using PCC to make a Menasor.

RiD Daytonus makes a good Detour.

I use RoTF Brawn as classics Brawn. Close enough.

I've been using Animated Shockwave to stand in for Classics Shockwave too, but WFC Shocky will take his place

I don't bother with stand-ins. Tried using Robot Replica Frenzy as a stand-in (Movie 1 Con cast) and instantly regretted it. I want to have a toy because I like it, not because I need to have the entire cast of something.

Besides, no one but the real deal will ever be able to properly proxy guys like Scrapper (Animated or RotF).

ROTF Hoist as Classics Hoist (though that's arguably a hybrid figure, which were specifically designed to be stand ins).
    ROTF Autobot Gears as Gears
    Energon Arcee as Classics Arcee
    Energon Scorponok as Classics Scorponok
Universe 2.0 Heavy Load as Classics Mixmaster
Cybertron Mini-con Laserbeak as Classics Laserbeak
    Animated Blitzwing as Blitzwing
    DOTM Guzzle as Classics Guzzle
PCC Heavy Tread as Classics Brawl (will be replaced as soon as FoC Brawl comes out)

I might put ROTF Brawn in my Classics collection as Brawn, although I can't decide whether I want him with Movie or Classics. WFC Soundwave is my Classics Soundwave. I'm currently using DOTM Skyhammer as Classics Whirl. I'm thinking about getting NYCC Arcee to be my Classics Arcee, but I'm not sure if I'd rather do that or wait and see if we'll get one in the Generations line. I'm also planning to put most other Prime figures I get into my Classics collection, although they'd mostly be as new characters, not stand-ins for others.

I don't like using stand ins. The difference in aesthetic/style really annoys me.

Energon Optimus Prime as Classics OP (in super mode, yes I could do better but there's no room for him in the A/E/C section and he's the largest not-movie Prime I own)
Energon Wing Saber as Classics Star Saber
Titanium 6" Hot Zone as Classics Hot Spot
    Movie 2007 Mudflap as Erector
Movie 2007 FAB Frenzy as himself (I got him for free, what else was I supposed to do with him?)
Animated Electrostatic Soundwave as Animated Soundblaster
    Animated Longarm as Animated Shockwave
    Animated Shockwave as Animated Longarm
    ROTF Bludgeon as Classics Bludgeon
ROTF Aerialbots (Energon Superion set repaints) as Classics Aerialbots/Superion
    PCC Huffer as Classics Huffer
(I classify all PCC figures as Classics, but Huffer is really the only stand-in)
RtS Cyclonus as Classics "Armada" (the original Universe 2.0 version serves as the true Cyclonus)
WFC Cliffjumper as Classics Cliffjumper (only because the head retool makes him totally different than my Classics BB) and for the time being Prime Cliffjumper (until the FE Cliffjumper I bought a little while ago comes in).
    WFC Soundwave as Classics Soundwave
Movie 2007 Storm Surge as SG Seaspray (although I don't know if this actually counts as a stand-in since that's actually the design meant for the character)
