Bludgeon (if that even counts as a stand in) and I might use Cybertron Armorhide as Pipes since I use Botcon Huffer as Huffer. Otherwise I don't really like stand ins, more often than not they look really out of place and sometimes I can't even tell what character the person is trying to make it when I see their collection.
I agree. And as much as the bot mode resembles it, I wonder if Breacher is HasTak taking a jab at Battle Rollar. ~Matt Booker
I 100% agree with Matt Booker, PRID Bulkhead makes a perfect Classics Bulkhead. He's a more simplified, less organic-looking take on Prime Bulkhead's design (versus the much more accurate FE version), which ends up being just about right for Classics. Even his reduced size works in his favor here.
Given that my display is "mixed" already with figs spanning at least 6 years (since classics started late 06) and both main and 3rd party lines, I've got a lot of 'stand-ins'. Customs spice it up even further. I use 'stand in' to broadly include 3rd party, augmented figs (new heads/weapons), and customs as well though. That said, I certainly have limits and hedge toward cartoon accuracy when possible, particularly with characters I have an attachment to. I'm more liberal with those I have less connection. In general, I probably go: cartoon accurate > very evocative > reminiscent. The most liberal I have is a HFTD Seaspray repainted into G1 colors and with a G1 accurate head, but even that bugs me d/t his size. I downsized Powerglide to the x-transbots version for more accuracy, but can't quite bring myself to swap 'spray out for the mini-warriors available.
ROTF Mindwipe as Mindwipe HFTD Highbrow as Highbrow HFTD Sandstorm as Sandstorm Movie Elita-One as Elita-One PCC Huffer as Ironworks BotCon 2012 Tracks as Road Rage
My CHUGs aren't set to just G1. I include Shattered Glass figures and 'retcon' characters(like RtS Lugnut) as well as lots of random inclusions like Universe Skywarp (the BM Jetstorm repaint), HFTD Terradive and Tomahawk, and personal SG repurposes, such as the Universe Devastator set(RID Build Team repaint) as my SG Build Team.
wait - Prime voyager Bulkhead is smaller than Classics Optimus?!? wow I juuuuust noticed he DOES look that 3rd party Battle Rollar as for me. I do use TFPRiD Arcee as - well Arcee and Starscream is going to have to be my defactor Starscream, even though I would have preferred the Cybertron/Galaxyforce voyager one to stand beside Classics-done-up-to-be-United Megatron. I'm trying to hold out to find a Energon Shockblast/Sixshot mold for a decent price, we all know for what - problem is that DOTM voyager Shockwave has started to show up at Ross/Marshall type stores and that is tempting. Skyhammer is well, , a new(?) character until I recently discovered there was a G-1 Skyhammer, go figure. I keep my DIA Commander as Ultra Magnus for now.
I mix my lines up. Since cybertron/galaxy force line mixed in well with the old classics line. I just let it all meld together. I think that's kind of the point of epic titles like "universe" and "Generations" anyway. To encounter and find allies across the Transformers Multiverse and face the larger dangers that are more than one heroic Age can handle.
WOW, I had no idea this thread could get so huge so quickly. And matt brooker IN MY THREAD! Thanks for all the posts guys. keep it up.
I'll still use energon Slugslinger till we get an official toy. (love the mold anyway ) and I'm also using ROTF beachcomber for classics beachcomber. Gonna paint it up a little to give it a more g1 look.
Nice to see someone else sees the resemblance between Evac and Blazemaster. Cybertron Swerve as G2 Hot Rod Burgandy Cybertron Starscream as War Within Thrust. I'd love it repainted as Jhiaxus Universe Scavenger and Long Haul as their G1 selves Energon Starscreams as War Within Seeker Drones Red RID Sideburn as Movieverse Hot Rod Red Scrapmetal as pre Beast Inferno Energon Ravage as G1/Pre Beast Ravage Energon Sharkticon as IDW Stormbringer Finback RTS Ransack as Stormbringer Iguanus Desert Movie Brawl as RID Armourhide
I've repurpose a few things around to accommodate my collections. MP Grimlock is on my classics, as well as RTS Lugnut, Lockdown, and Drift. TFP Shockwave floats between my TFP figures, and classics I'm even using FOC Jazz for my Shatteredglass figures.
I was using Energon Bulkhead as my Springer stand-in until a few weeks then I got the Generations version and now he is my permanent Springer. Also of another subject but I added my Armada Unicron to my G1 Collection,he may not be totally G1 in looks but he does fit in pretty good with my G1's.
As update for what I posted almost a year ago; PRiD deluxe Ratchet is my Ratchet and so will Jackie-Boy be my Wheel Jacket(I plan to get rid of the swords and give him some repair tools). I think that PRiD Kup mold would make great customs for either Gears/Swerve or even a Brawn/Outback. BeastHunters voyager Shockwave is my Shockwave because I like the way the robot mode looks and I'm one of the few who's not bothered by the H-tank mode either. If I see a Airachnid on the cheap I may get it just for the head to I start my Slipstream project. Warbot Assaulter is... well I that's obvious who he's supposed to be p.s. Oh yeah, PRiD Arcee is Chromia because that thing looks more like Chromia anyways
I try to make my Classics shelves more complete so I use several stand-ins. Here's what I have so far: MP Grimlock as G1 Grimlock ROTF Mindwipe as G2 Skyjack, with GDO Laserbeak as his mountable Skystalker HFTD Oil Pan as G2 Windbreaker turned Decepticon DOTM Space Case as G2 Space Case YOTS Omega Supreme Amazon Exclusive Unicron Generations Titan Metroplex Universe 2.0 Onslaught as Armada Demolisher, whom I have chilling with RTS Lugnut and GDO Power Dive. I think ROTF/United Bruticus Maximus with FP stuff make a better Combaticons team. Prime RID Ultra Magnus, Arcee, and Ratchet; I also use Vehicons to beef up my Classics Starscream shelf.
