I'm confused as to how the people could not get evicted from the house, or that the police could/would not do anything about it. Can anyone explain that one to me?

What a load of horseshit. Were I in such a situation, I'd band together an army of willing friends and retake my house by force. No need to involve the police.

I think the interesting part is that it was possible for the same thing to happen NEXT DOOR within such a short period of time.

That's completely disgraceful. I can't be overly outraged by the family as it seems they got hosed too, although what they did is still shameful. I think the big villain in all this is the real estate agent who let out Mr. Pope's house to these people. A pox upon his house! He has earned the scorn of the internets! And there is no greater shame than the sham cast down by the internets.

The laws governing squatters rights in the UK are completely ridiculous. We've studied it a bit... and they can set up shop just about anywhere. It's insanely difficult to legally force them away and, from what I've read, often results in property damage and minor violence towards the land owner.

I feel for the guy, I really do. Glad he got his house back. I can't even imagine how he was feeling as i'm sure i wouldn't have been able to control myself and most likely bricked the window and gone wild on the scum.

I must say I like the Mail Online, lots of news more than on the BBC's website.

That's the part I find suspicious. They moved into Mr. Pope's home, but they could tell by all the furniture and possessions that it was still occupied. Why then did they pay the estate agent if they knew the deal was bogus?

Google that shit. I did. And appearantly squatting is a matter of civil not criminal law, unless they had to break in. But if the squatter has exclusive access they can be considered the legal occupants. That is none of the doors, windows, or locks are broken. And the squatters have key's to the locks. Also if you squat for 10 or 20 years you can claim ownership of the property, provided no one tries to evict you. Which can takes years if you know the laws. This case however looks like someone does know the laws and is trying to get just enough between tough to evict squatting and quick to evict squatting to make a quick buck.

The scam was about sub-letting. Meaning you live in someone else's house while they aren't there. This one might have been sold as furniture and all I guess.

Neither of which can be applied to this case.

I don't buy that the family was completely innocent in this case. And the house was broken into in the first place. This is just a screwed up situation all around and had it happened to a man in his prime you can be sure it would have escalated to violence.

Swords are legal, though, right? After that, it just becomes a matter of saying they'd left, you reclaimed the house, and were now defending your home.

In the end there can only be one homeowner?

seriously though this is whacked , if something like thins happened in the US in the wrong neighborhood, or to a person who was already stressed to the breaking point someone would likely end up dead.

In the UK, I don't think so to be honest. I think there's like a length limit on what you can own and carry. But maybe some of you fellas from across the pond can clear that issue up some. (probably varies by region/location as well)

The only reason there wasn't any violence involved with this situation is clearly because he was already and elderly sick old man. They targeted someone who they knew really couldn't fight back.

I was about to say, "Smith, Wesson and me aren't gonna let you get away with that."
