Is it a good idea? Or should i attempt to remove it first? I'm not sure if paint remover from hobby stores will work (kinda seems unlikely) so how do i go about it? Any pros can offer tips?

I spray painted a base coat over the chrome on a Transmetal figure so it should be ok.

well you can remove chrome by soaking it i coke cola for a few days i know for fact this works. also you can sand it so the paint sticks to the chrome well

    Ebay:
you should get the same effect with artificial vinegar, they have the same active ingredient which is the mild acid. much more direct than getting ants everywhere.
