Not only is it secuROM, it is an extremely restrictive version of SecuROM, requiring the game(s) be validated online every 10 days to continue functioning.

Oh fuck you EA, fuck you so very very hard.

I'm sure a workaround (likely illegal of course) will surface in due time.

    Obviously.

The problem is, if you spend any time on a games website these days, there's stories cropping up everyday from developers pissing and moaning about piracy and how its killing PC gaming sales; which, they're well within their right to be upset about.

...but its shit like this that pushes people towards piracy in the first place. The fact that you have to validate your copy of Mass Effect PC every ten days online? That's straight-up insane -- and someone who makes more money than I can even dream of, got paid to think it was a good idea.

And reading posts from the guys at Bioware over on their forums....it is as it seems. If you do not activate after 10 days, you will have to contact Customer Support to reauthenticate your game. Cause like, they were so very helpful with Bioshock.

    Ugh.

I've read oh so many posts over this with people saying pretty much what I and a fair few people feel, that this is only going to further drive people to pirate the games and (though not in my case) many won't purchase the game at all.

But is it not pirating that forces them to do stuff like this?

To an extent, they kinda feed off of eachother. Piracy really isn't as bad as a lot of companies make it out to be (there are plenty of games that don't have the consumer jump through hoops to play that don't have issues, and look at Bioshock..was cracked in 3 weeks), and things like this just frustrate people and they lose more business due to it (either by people just refusing to get the game, or by people deciding to pirate it out of spite).

Wow, that's lame. Seriously. What the hell do I do if I have no internet for ten days (it has been known to happen)? What if I am busy for more than ten days and don't play? Do I need to boot up this sucker no matter what every ten damn days? I need to effing call them to play a game I already paid for if I can't get validated in time?? The fuck?? I really want Spore, but damn...

The world gets nuttier every day.

Another "fuck you" EA. Although what can I do now? I want ME and Spore, but no way Im putting more of that Secu-shit on my computer. Bioshock was already too far. Now this is just an outrage. EA is going to be lucky if they didnt loose me as a customer on these games.

How about the software companies release the completely unprotected games at a sensible price and then sell downloadable content. These companies always say it's piracy that forces them to keep prices high but strangely console games have always been expensive though there's a lot less piracy.

I'm in the camp of 'if something has annoying antipiracy measures, wait until it's hacked rather than buying it' The companies are shooting themselves in the foot.

(Don't get me started on EA - with their pricing for rock band in the uk).

Indeed, I'll take stability and less hassle over slightly better graphics and resolution.

Well SHIT. I really, really wanted Mass Effect to play it at 1920x1080 on my PC but if they're going to pull these sorts of shit pot antics then I guess I might, just might, buy a 360 and Mass Effect and another HDMI.

Well shit. I really REALLY want Spore, but this is...wow.

I wish more companies were like...whoever it was that put out Galactic Civ. No copy protection scheme AT ALL. No hassle. No fuss.
