"Splice" movie - tv/trailers don't do it justice?

(Searched, found no thread for this little movie coming out this month)

I've been seeing trailers and TV spots for Splice, a new movie about scientists making some kind of gene-spliced mutant thing which, of course, looks to go amok and all killy.

The spots looked ok, sort of "another science makes monster that runs amok yadda yadda" thing. Maybe a renter.

Well the Mrs and I saw IM2 in the theatres yesterday and during the "commercials and crap" time before trailers start, they showed a whole uncut 2 min scene from Splice. It was a pretty simple scene - Sarah Polley's character is simply trying to determine whether the critter/girl is smart enough to make associations. The critter/girl was little, like kid or older toddler aged-ish (in it's lifespan at least?). It was a quiet, non scary scene with scrabble letters. But the critter/kid/girl was SO FREAKY. It walks like a bird and moves its head the same way, like it sees sideways. It was wearing a dress too, which just made it 10x creepier.

The scene was quiet and nothing really happened, but it was scary as hell. Freaked me and the Mrs right out and now I really want to see this flick, on the hope that it is as good as that scene.

Plus, I have a crush on Sarah Polley. Dawn of the Dead. RRRRawr. :)  :p

Anyhoo, the point of this thread is partly to say that this may indeed be a movie not to be judged on trailers and TV spots, and also to ask if anyone is planning to see it?

The trailers and TV spots absolutely do NOT do it justice. I've been following this movie for a while, and there's a reason it was so beloved at Cannes. It's such a pity that they've decided to go this route of selling it to the public at large, because they couldn't have gone for a poorer representation. :(

I agree. It's nice to hear you guys say this, because it's sold as Species 4, Electric Boogalo. I was still going to watch it, but it's nice to hear what you guys are saying about it.

Someone I know from another board saw it early, and this is what he had to say. Officially pumped to see it now. :rock

First, don't go to Splice expecting torture porn, slasher gore, or random violence. Splice is a family film, believe it or not. It's far beyond twisted, and prods firmly at moral and ethical boundaries, but at it's heart, it's all about the parental instinct, the grey area between good and evil, and about the ways the love, fear, and hate can turn on a dime if the right conditions are met.

Before I get into it, let's talk about the Seattle Mignight Adrenaline Audience:

We really like shocking oddities of film. My first was Evil Aliens, by Jake West.

We are a raucous crowd. We shout at the screen. We rave over dismemberments. We're out for the thrill. This year, we have a few standouts:

    Robogeisha

    Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil

    etc......

Splice was something a little different. In the First act, it's all about the gifted Mad Scientists at work. Adrian Brody had a few weak moments, but Sarah Polley anchors the whole film, as does Dren, later on.

The second act follows the (deliberately) predictable trials every new parent faces. It's Two Labcoats and a Baby (not an insult in the case), as Clive and Elsa bond with Dren, raising her like a child, albeit with heavy locks on the doors. I had a few friends that were put off by this. All of the familiar paces that new Parents go through are featured here, made all the more believable by the excellent performance of Dren's Actors, along with near flawless CGI. We've always got one eye on Dren. She's sure to become a problem, right? Plus, who hasn't seen Species? Only Dren isn't portrayed by Natasha Henstridge and H.R.Giger; She's far more a sympathetic character. She also doesn't have the convienence being a stunning one moment, and a monster the next. She is at all times both, and neither of those things. There is never any time where you can forget what she is, and above all, she's an innocent, and potentially deadly.

The Third act was amazing. It's full of moral and ethical reversals, The Audience I screened it with laughed repeatedly, and uncomfortably. Your allegiance to any character will be tested. I know that there are a lot of cynical people on this board. We eat, drink ,and breathe it here. But with Splice, we've been lured by the tropes, and in the end, I wasn't decided on who to root for, until one character goes off the deep end, and when the credits rolled, I wondered if I wasn't looking at calculated victim.

I hope you all get to see it. I don't think that you'll all react to it the way I did. Some of you will hate it. Such is life on DM.Net. Thanks, Don, and please tell Susan thanks as well. I hope this does well in wide release. Mainstream audiences need an enema.

Relieved to read this may not be the schlockfest the trailers make it out to be. Might actually go see it now!

As both a recent father and a horror/scifi fan, I can't wait to see this. I think it'll really get wifey and I good.

The trailers and commercials will get asses in the seats. The problem is if they are misselling the film to the point that people will be pissed that they didn't get what they wanted.

Anyone else go see this? Saw it tonight with a buddy and we both really liked it. I felt it had that "just right" mix of predictable and unpredictable moments. Also I was surprised at just how funny some parts were. There was one extremely graphic scene that gave me a fit of nearly uncontrollable laughter, which I felt guilty about until the soundtrack quieted down and I realized there were a lot of other people laughing, too. It's definitely a unique film and I'll happily watch it again. The tone reminded me of The Host in a way - a monster movie, but an intelligent and cerebral one. Brody and Polley were absolutely perfect in their roles, too.

Yeah, as that scene was playing out I was thinking, "I wonder if it means that she's part of it and it's part of her or if it means that it's going to...oooooohhh...it's the latter." :lol

This definite makes me think it is another Species movie but minus the Electric Boogaloo. Well, minus the "Electric". Just Boogaloo.

Apparently it's doing fairly well with critics. 72% on Rotten Tomatoes.

when I first saw the trailer for this thing I thought it looked dumb as hell. Now I'm curious.
I probably won't be able to get around to seeing it in theaters, but maybe something I'll look into when it hits DVD.

Saw it last night. It was okay, not great. The scrabble scene was cool. THe rest was creepy, but the SPOILER: the creature and the guy doing it was just plain unneeded.
