What's his role in the films? I understand he doesn't interfere with Bay as producer, but I certainly hope he sticks around for the third film cos Spielberg has a good grasp on what audiences can tolerate.

I'm afraid we lost him forever. He even said ROTF is awesome... from the same guy who did Schindler's List!
This is The Dark Age for real, man!

He read every draft of the film's script and gave feedback, wanted the film to revolve around Sam and Bumblebee, offered the direction to Bay, and may have suggested Shia LaBeouf. His involvement on the sequel was more limited as he was busy. I recall around late 2007 he was divorcing Paramount, finishing Indiana Jones, and trying to get Trial of the Chicago 7 ready to film in March 2008, which didn't happen due to the strike, as well as another preshoot on Tintin (And good god, all in time before dinner with his kids at six pm).

to be fair, he also must have liked Indiana Jones 4 considering his involvement with it. and awesome and good are too different things. a movie doesn't have to be good to be awesome. examples: boondock saints, quantum of solace, the bourne series, speed, the matrix reloaded. i could go on.

Except for Quantum Of Solace, which was a piece of directionless shit that had no right to exist after the brilliant reboot with Casino Royale. Did you see the movie? Just my personal opinion here, but the plot was horrible, the characters and villains were horrible, and unlike ROTF, you can't say 'well, at least the action was great', because the action was filmed by a cameraman with more shaky cam and blur than 10 Michael Bays on steroids.

    But glad you liked it.

    Executive Producer

gives the general pitch of the story
    approves the script
    hires the director
and most importantly finances the film

I dunno what else they do other than that

Spielberg's involvement with ROTF was minimal, and it shows in my opinion. He is quoted as saying he had to ground Bay somewhat the first time round and wanted to emphasis the 'boy getting his first car' element of the story.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull looks like a bloody masterpiece next to RoTF.

That's for sure! Spielberg would do better movies than Bay even if blind, deaf and mute all at the same time.

I have lost my faith in Spielberg after Indy 4. I think he completely lost his movie touch.

You're forgetting just how much bad influence George Lucas had in that movie. Amongst of things he was the sole reason for the whole 'aliens' story element, not to mention the reason why the damn thing was delayed for years...
