My mom has been making cakes for years. She decided to start back into it again after a lapse and has started using fondant. People apparently like what she does so she's been booked for months. The problem is...her character cakes look like crap.

Here's one she did last month:

In case you couldn't figure it out...this little gem is Dora the Explorer. I know, I know.

So shortly after she started this one she got commissioned for a Spider-Man cake. I died a little inside. I dreaded what she was going to do to poor Spidey. I suggested, a couple days later, that she make a bunch of sky scraper buildings and just put a little action figure on the top. She said they just wanted a sheet cake....crap.

My mom is a bit older, but she knows how to use the internet. Kind of. Instead of searching for images of Spider-Man to use, she searched for cakes of Spider-Man to use. She found one, printed it out, copied it, enlarged it, then copied it again. The result was hardly recognizable anymore and she was using this thing as a template. Anyway...this is what she came up with:

    Holy jebus.

She seemed to be proud of it...so I let her run with it.

    For a few hours...

I finally broke down and asked her if I could try to work with the fondant to see if I could do something else. She agreed. I rejoiced.

    I came up with this:

    next to the template:

I'll pipe the webbing on tomorrow after she frosts the cake. But for now, rest easy true believers. The cake has been saved.

    Edit:
    Final product

Good on ya for saving Mom's ass. Yeah, I think that Cthulhu-esque spidey would have made its way onto cake-wrecks.com if it had left the house.

    The cake is saved!

I think it's better in the end..your mother would have gotten in a bit of an embarassing situation with that Spidey cake..so good job :)

I don't know man, your moms cake looks pretty accurate to the 60's cartoon. Your spidey is really nice too :D  you guys should work together! with moms baking skills and your fondant skills, plus your vast knowlege of licensed characters, you'd be an unstoppable duo!

The Dora one isn't bad (except is the cake supposed to be resting on her lap? Those legs are teeeeeny!) It's at least recognizable. Spidey.....oooh that's not good. The steamroller comment is pretty accurate! Good save!

Thanks all. I'll be trying to get the webbing on here shortly. I'm trying to get her to do the cake like a comic book cover, have the "The Amazing Spider-Man" across the top and have Marvel, price, and CCA stamp in the upper left, maybe even a bar code on the bottom...

Steamrolled is what I thought of hers too. I like the Cthulhu reference, the hand kinda looked like a flipper to me at first, but I can see tentacles in it :p

The Dora one is all out of scale. I actually had to hunt down the head for her. It's an 8 inch foam ball, the size of a volley ball. And yeah, that's supposed to be a little cupcake in her lap, well it really is a real cupcake.

    Lmao...sure.

Good save. Love that show Cake Boss, their cakes are like whoah.
Might bite into some cardboard or a steel pole, but they're still awesome.

I don't know why you have to put down your mom's efforts.....My mom is amazing when it comes to making cakes and she used to make the coolest cakes for us when we were kids but if she sucked at it, I wouldn't embarass her like this and I wouldn't put her down. I'd let her go with it because I know she would feel proud of her work. I couldn't just shoot her down, even if it were a contest. Her happiness over something she did is worth more than winning.

It's nice that you tried to help her out, though, but it sucks if she felt bad about it :/

i didnt think he was outright putting his mom down (and theres the thing where shes doing this as a commission, not for fun/personal) so it was kinda sweet for the OP to try and save the moms face. kudos!

but its funny how hes like, eh, its dora, who cares...NO MOM NOT TO SPIDEY TOO *arise inner radicom*
