The sparkabots (autobots) and firecons (decepticons) were a series of late g1
pocket money minibots. That had friction motors, straightforward transformations and each had a flint wheel for emitting sparks.

I've had sizzle of the sparkabots for years and was probably my favorite toy in pre-school. What do you think of these unique minibots? Or do you even think their unique at all.

I always thought they were pretty cool; I've actually got all versions of them that I know of (all the original Sparkabot and Firecons, plus the G2 versions, Sizzle, Blaze, Sparkstalker and Flamefeather). Their articulation isn't exactly brilliant, obviously (the Sparkabots can only move their arms, the Firecons can only move their legs), but heck, they're basically G1 minibots.
Some of mine still have fantastic flamethrowers in them (G1 Sparkstalker blasts well over a foot!).

I always thought the UK name, Sparkler Mini-bots, was much better than Sparkabots. :)

Seriously. Think about the design of Movie Scorpinok. Incorperating the same style of spark mini-generator that was in the original Sparkabots and Firecons shouldn't be too hard. The fire hazard thing is likely what keeps Hasbro from making them, though.

That gimmick sounds a thousand times better than "cyber planet keys". I'm surprised that they were considered safe back THEN.

What fire hazard? Have you ever played with one of those things? Get the sucker sparking and stick your hand in front of it. Nothing.

Why not just replace the actual sparking with a flickering l.e.d. for any updates?

Because that would be crap, is why. They might as well just not do them at all.

Yeah, but nowadays Hasbro would have to deal with hypothetical lawsuits of someone putting their eye or internal organs or a gasoline-soaked little sister in front of the sparker. :)

Damn lawsuit culture and modern kids being stupid.
In my day, potentially dangerous toys taught us respect and restraint. Yes, that missile could have your eye out, so you didn't point it at your face. That toy was made of plastic before you broke it, it's not made of candy now.
If you got injured by your toys, it was your own fault for being a moron, and rightly so.

Very true, and yet everything changed the day some enterprising lawyer said "Hey, I think I know how we can make back your kid's medical expenses and then some."

Well they are redoing one of the Triggercons with the Cyb Red Alert mold, so who knows. It's funny how the end of G1 saw small groups of gimmick bots like that. I think 3 or 4 of them sparkers were repainted in Japan as well, which was pretty cool.

It's easy to place blame on attorneys, but to do so is to neglect a complex series of factors that contribute to these things.

The spark-generating gimmick isn't all that dangerous, but the production costs for it are not suitable for Basic-class figures these days.
