I knew that 42 million I had in the bank would come in handy some day.

Just a nitpick: they shouldn't talk about "retiring" them - I think they should use the term "decommission" in the Naval tradition. But maybe that's just me.

And it doesn't sound like they're selling them, per se....

    I know, semantics.

If these things end up in a junkyard or a private collection instead of a museum of some kind I am going to be very, very pissed at NASA.

Doesn't seem like they're really up for sale, just up for museum purchasing. Drat, and I was planning on buying the Endeaver dirt cheap, tearing her down to spaceframe, and rebuilding her as a better shuttle, then conquering the moon. Oh well.

If you're willing to shell out nearly 50 million to buy a shuttle from NASA, I'd imagine they really don't care who you are.

    Hmmm, $42 mill + ($400,000-800,000 x 3) = flying space shuttle...

Would be cool if loaded celebrities bought them and donated them off to museums/colleges. Fuck the bling, that some true bragging rights.

Maybe even throw it on ebay for kicks. ...starting at $1

Take whichever shuttle is the most damaged (i.e., least ideal for permanent museum display), chop it down to bite-size pieces and sell them for $200-$300 apiece to the public. I'd happily pay that amount to own a couple of parts from a shuttle that went into space. The shuttle program has been a major part of my life for nearly 30 years, sure would be neat to own a piece of it now that it's going away.

Yes, I realize there would be all kinds of red tape / environmental concerns to doing somethng like that, but it sure would be cool.

Thats a neat idea, like the Iron Man movie Trading cards, you could take a piece of a shuttle and put them into premium trading cards!

    I'd buy a few.
