I believe the most minions he ever released was four, in the movie. Could be wrong. Was there ever canon explanation as to how many he could carry (I think there were seven tapes total). Is 'wave's gullet a pocket dimension that every so often grows another minion?

Maybe they mass shift on the way out, in the same way he mass shifts into boombox mode.

Technically he wasn't a boombox. He was a simple tape-recorder. Blaster was the boombox.

Isn't there a Soundwave reissue that can hold two cassettes instead of the original one capacity?

I think that was the SDCC exclusive that used the Soundblaster mold that could hold two cassettes rather than one.

I didn't care for that mold. Made him look thick.

I agree, I didn't really like it either, but it looks bad ass as Soundblaster!

The big cassette tray just didn't seem to translate well into clear plastic, but it looks awesome in the red.

Actually they also did a reissue like that as well. IIRC it was a Toys 'R' Us exclusive

Actually, you're right. The TRU exclusive "Classics" Soundwave was the Soundblaster mold that came with Laserbeak and Ravage, while the SDCC version had the regular cassette tray but came with Laserbeak, Ravage, Buzzsaw, and Ratbat.

    LOL.

Or, perhaps he's suffering from undiagnosed multiple personality disorder, and all the minions are avatars of aspects of his personality. ;)

He carried as many as the plot demanded. They never explained anything in G1.

Pretty much this. If they needed Rumble, Ravage, and Laserbeak in a given episode then that is who popped out. If they needed Frenzy, Rumble and Buzzsaw, then that is who we saw.

I think it all comes down to who they were advertising at the time. I think this is why we never really saw Buzzsaw that often. They didn't need to advertise him because he came with Soundwave but the others needed to be advertised separately. But we also almost never see him because he's basically identical to Laserbeak, same goes with Frenzy. I think they just picked one of each different cassette type to use in the cartoon, and then threw the other two a bone every now and then.

Odd thing is though, in the "Call of the Primitives" episode we see Slugfest and Overkill, but they weren't available in store until the following year. So if you saw them in 86 and liked them, you had to wait till 87 to actually get them. Good thing the show was in syndication so we still saw these two in the show when they hit store shelves.

The interior of Soundwave's chest comprises an entire cabana bar and lounge where his cassette minions live in balmy splendor whenever their services are not required.

Soundwave's a magic lamp. Rub him (preferably on his rubsign) and his minions pop out. Then Soundwave issues his wish - usually 'Infiltrate' or 'Eliminate' or some such. Occasionally Robin Williams will eject and Soundwave has to terminate him before he starts talking. Cries and screams are music to Soundwave's ears, Patch Adams isn't.

If you rub me in the right spot, things come firing out of me too...er....nevermind.

Is that the new Botcon pickup line? "Hey baby, wanna rub my rubsign and see what pops out?"

It would work on me, and I'm a heterosexual male! I had to stop myself from diving into the screen.
