    Soundwave doesn't transform into the entire satellite, he attaches to the satellite.
    Plus, his satellite panels make him look bigger than he actually is.

    I would have thought that soundwave lost all his satellite junk before coming to earth and then chose a vehicle mode
    Its prob like optimus having jetfires parts on him, it makes Optimus look bigger but when he gets it off hes back to his usual size again?

    But it doesnt really matter to me cos he mass shifted in G1 alot

    It's not necessarily mass shifting if you get smaller. Soundwave must have just ditched his "Pretender shell" somewhere. :p  Or he let it burn up when he entered the atmosphere, or he donated parts to Megatron, or he jettisoned some stuff in space...
