I was wondering if this has ever been done? I have a continuity in my head (We all have one) where Soundwave defects to the Autobots. I think the idea would be pretty different and original.

An interesting concept indeed. How well it works depends on the execution of how it happens, I would say.

Only if Megatron do it first.

Soundwave is usually portrayed as the most loyal Decepticon, so no, I don't think so.

I could see it happening during a period of leadeship upheaval in the Decepticons. But at the same time, I think it would basically be Dark Designs in reverse, with Soundwave doing what comes naturally to him: gathering blackmail on his teammates, sabotaging their lives, and manipulating things behind the scenes to put whatever teammates he viewed as "a threat" at each other's throats. Eventually people would figure it out, and run him off the team.

Pretty much my thoughts. I usually prefer my Soundwave to be completely loyal even until death, but if they can come up with a reasonable explanation, I'd be game. Like if Megatron became too power-crazy and Soundwave deemed Megatron's actions to be harmful to the Decepticon cause, I can see him teaming up with the Autobots in order to rectify the situation. ... And then promptly return to Megatron's side.

So Starscream can, and Soundwave can't? Yup, that makes sense.

That sounds reasonable, as in something Soundwave would do.

Where did I say it was okay for Starscream to join the Autobots? I didn't. That would be just as stupid.

Where do Soundwave's loyalties lie? If it's Megatron himself rather than the Decepticon cause, then Soundwave could believably defect if Megatron died and/or someone "inferior" took his place. Of course, it's more likely he'd remain a Decepticon and set in motion a covert plan that involves manipulating basically everyone to bring Megatron back. It'd actually be pretty neat to see Soundwave fake being an Autobot just to further that goal.

While both Armada and Prime Starscreams (very briefly) joined the Autobots, both cases were more out of saving their hides rather than wanting to do any good, and something of an extension of the classic Starscream "hide behind something bigger, then go after Megatron" tactic.

Because Soundwave is fanatically loyal not just to Megatron, but to the Decepticon cause.

The most recent example is in Regeneration One, where he's leading a group of Neo-Decepticons over 30 years after the war ended.

    Ebay:
Maybe he could defect if he deems Shockwave's leadership skills inferior or generally disagrees with his decisions?

The only plausible way i could see it happening was if Megatron was murdered in cold Energon, I do not mean in battle I mean killed by a fellow deception who then usurped the leadership for himself.

I have always felt Soundwave's loyalty was to Megatron rather than the Decepticons.

That said he would have a hard time convincing the Autobots to trust him even if he wasn't up to some treachery.

The only way I could see it happening is if Megatron defected. And I have to say, I would totally watch a Transformers where they pulled a Magneto and Optimus died and Megatron, realizing what his actions had done, joins the Autobots to take revenge on the Decepticons that did it, leading to some decepticons joining the bots (Soundwave, maybe a few others) and a few Autobots deserting the team and forming a third faction, while the Decepticons are led by a new Big Bad.

I could maybe see Soundwave allying with the Autobots if the circumstances were dire enough, but I could never see him wearing the Autobot insignia. Like Blackarachnia's refusal to become a Maximal even after she'd joined them.
