It always bugged me why was Megatron keeping Starscream as second in command when he always tried to betray him or try to take him down to take control of the Decepticons where Soundwave was always loyal to Megatron never betrated him never tried to take him down and he always obeyed him to all his orders to either him or send his cassettes to spy on the Autobots. To me he should of been second in command. Another question if Soundwave really cared for Megs why didnt he stop Screemer when he was about to throw Megs out the Ship?? Does anyone know?

I know this might sound annoying....lol

    Thanks anyways

Perfect example of how you should keep your friends close and your enemies even closer.

Soundwave wasn't really loyal, just backing who he perceived to have the best chance of success. He would just as soon side with Starscream if Megatron got bumped off.

    Soundwave =/= loyal.

    The guy's a ladder-climber, opportunist and blackmailer.

He has dirt on pretty much everyone within the Decepticon ranks, which he gleans using his ability to monitor the electrical impulses inside any TF's brain circuitry if they stand near him. And he will use anything he can to advance his status in his superiors' eyes.

It depends on which G1 you're referring to:

    Cartoon: Starscream
    Comics: Shockwave

Soundwave is a follower and not a leader, he'll follow anyone with remote success, he did show loyalty as when Megatron asked him to not leave him he said as you command, if not said would he have left him?

It was never really established in G1 but I reckon TFP will show him more. He shows loyalty to whichever big boss is there, he's an opportunist imo.

Starscream had initiative and was more ruthless then megs (g1 cartoon). I recall many times Megs ran when Scream said they should stay and finish them off. I'd rather have that as my second in command of an evil army then a brown noser.

Was it ever explicitly said in the cartoon that Starscream was the 2nd?

Not in the cartoon, which is pretty much what the op was basing the topic on.

Depends on what you consider "explicitly said".

Every time Megatron was incapacitated or thought dead, Starscream assumed command.

No one ever challenged his command, not even Shockwave.

The tech spec is one thing, but his portrayal in the G1 cartoon shows a very different character. I believe that cartoon Soundwave was indeed very loyal to Megatron, and contrary to his tech spec, I don't think all the other Decepticons hated him. I don't think he was blackmailing all of them. Think about it- it's an army of ruthless killers that's lead by the most ruthless of them all. I doubt there's very little "dirt" that Soundwave could dig up that would be of any concern to anyone. Even stabbing each other in the back is met with indifference among the 'cons. For that matter, there's no evidence in the cartoon of Soundwave ever resorting to blackmail.

The scene in TFTM where Megatron says, "Don't leave me." I saw Soundwave running towards Astrotrain with his back to Megatron. The way I saw it, he wasn't aware that Megatron was there until his leader called out to him. And the fact that he called on Soundwave and not anyone else kind of says something.
Inside Astrotrain. . . well, they are Decepticons afterall. If it seemed apparent that their leader was near death with no chance of recovery, then perhaps Soundwave opted to carry on the legacy of his leader.

Galvatron didn't seem to hold it against him after returning. Even showed an outburst of emotion when Soundwave got killed in Headmasters.
