I'm not sure if this has been posted before but, in the 1983 Microman Catalog the picture for MC-10 (Cassette Man) his prototype featured black, NOT BLUE, plastic, and Trailbreaker's head. I have no idea where the real Soundblaster got his color chosen from but to me it came from the Microman line.

Funny enough, the Diaclone Trailbreaker was molded in blue. Whodathunkit?

The show origin was blaster and soudwave beat each other to death, only their heads were salvaged and they got rebuilt. It was an excuse for new figure to be made on the cheap.

I knew that lol, what I mean't was idk where the color black came from for his repaint selection, and as for twincast, the Microman original MC-21 was a blue mold of blaster

hey RHansen is that a number munchers dude as your avatar?

Doubt that's the "inspiration" for Soundblaster, but it's neat to see, along with the other early-concept Diaclone/Microman pics, like Megatron with the trigger guard that folds up onto the chest.

Yeah, I don't think that's really connected. There's no actual toy there in a lot of the Diaclone catalog images, and all Cassette Robo has before being released is the artist renderings you show there. Blacks are often used to represent shadowed or very dark blues in print, too.

    Awesome, I love pre-TFs.

As far as the colours go, who knows? Perhaps someone at Takara in the day did look back at these original sketches and said "hey, let's use those", since after all they pulled out the Diaclone Trainbots and Browning from Microman the following year. They were definitely looking at their back catalogue. It's not beyond the realms of possibility.

this has probably been posted already but after wanting to know what pre-megatron's japanese name was in english...was, I asked my friend who read/spoke japanese and it turns out that it is plainly:
    Gun Robo. lol.

and here are quotes from the IM conversation:
edit:btw cassette man really is "cassette man" although since its written in huge print on the window i think that would be pretty self explanitory
