When I saw the trailer for this, I went, "Oh wow, that looks pretty good!" My one complaint was that Zuko wasn't bald, and that was only because, I wasn't a die hard fan of the series, when I saw someone mash up footage from the show, and the trailer, I went, "Holy damn! I need to see that!" And then... It came out. I could barely watch the making of on Nick without cringing.
Well here's the thing that was even more confusing. Those two were mentioned by name in the movie, yet still the dragon replaced both, not to mention the statue of Kyoshi looked like a man.
And don't forget, Aang or Ooooooong actually had to remind earth benders that they had earth under their feet to motivate them in that brilliant speech.
The movie is sort of like the acting scenes in the book 3 episode the ember island players, but worse. It's like the whole movie is one giant spoof. (An awful spoof at that)
It makes me sad to know it'll take about five more years before someone else can actually start the franchise right.
I saw this in theaters. I'm a huge fan of the series... you know the two things I will never forget from this movie? A small child YELLING at the screen correcting it on the pronunciations of the names and how broken the cosplayers looked coming out of the theater. They were hoping for Star Wars, what they got was the Star Wars Christmas Special. Do NOT see this movie. Don't waste your money buying/renting it, do not waste you bandwidth downloading it (legally or otherwise), just... DO NOT.
I'm curious to see how/if they'll reboot it or if Shyamalan permanently ruined the franchise as a movie series.
Given how beloved Korra is being received I'd think there is a non-zero probability of it being done again; especially if they no longer have to keep the word Avatar out of the title.
The image that immediately comes to mind when I read that is the scene from The Band Wagon when all the rich people are walking out of the theater in complete shock because the musical they just watched had been beyond horrible.
They started the franchise right in 2005. The cartoon is brilliant. There's no need for anymore Avatar movies.
Fuck no. It's one of the worst movies I have ever seen. A disaster in all ways. It doesn't just fail as an adaptation, it fails as a piece of entertainment. It's not even so bad it's good. It just hurts to watch.
This movie literally pained me because I was a HUGE avatar fan at the time. I'm still a fan, just not as much as I was back then. That movie did soooo many things wrong,I wouldn't even know where to start. This is a prime example of why great cartoons or animes should never be turned into live action movies. If you thought Dragon Ball Evolution was bad, you haven't seen anything yet.
The problem doesn't lie in how cartoons and anime shouldn';t be adapted to live action. It's just that many of them have been given to horrible directors to tamper with. Within the right hands, you can bet someone can make an amazing Avatar The Last Airbender movie. Not likely to happen anytime soon though.
