Sony's Exclusives Coming Up Short (sales wise)? Why?

    Kotaku - Sony's Exclusives Coming Up Short? - PS3
    [IMG]

"From the day of the PS3's launch, Sony have pursued a bold strategy of constantly launching new, original IP as exclusive titles on the console. But while it's a move that should be applauded on principle, it's just not translating into sales.

Number-cruncher Matt Matthews has, in a report over on GameSetWatch, detailed the sales performance of Sony's new, exclusive titles, revealing a lineup of games that are two-headed beasts: somehow managing to consistently find critical success while being, relative to their exposure and advertising backing, commercial flops.

Excluding games sold as part of hardware bundles, for example, only a single game published by Sony on the PS3 has sold over a million copies at retail, and that's the original Resistance. LittleBigPlanet is close to this figure, but many other high-profile releases - such as Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and Uncharted - are not.

The numbers look even worse compared to sales for exclusive titles on other platforms. Gears of War sold a million units in a month on the 360. Gears 2 sold 1.5 million in the same amount of time. Smash Bros has sold over 4 million units on the Wii, and Mario Kart over six million.

So what gives? Matthews raises the possibility that Sony put too much faith in new stuff. Rather than having Insomniac and Naughty Dog release Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter games, which would have sold, Sony let them first release all-new titles, Resistance and Uncharted, neither of which have so far matched the sales or pulling power of their better-known PS2 platformers

We're also only seeing proper releases in Sony's two biggest series - God of War and Gran Turismo - now. Well, not even now. 2009, 2010. Three, four years after the console was first released. They should perform better than any of the above titles, but you have to wonder whether it has been wise of Sony to release nothing but original titles to date (Killzone aside), when a God of War or two by now may have spurred sales of both PS3 hardware and software.

Analysis: Was Using Original IP The Best Idea For Sony's PS3 Strategy? [GameSetWatch]"

Why do you guys think this is?

No, no, go right ahead because I'm sure it's completely originial, poignant and thought provoking.

As for the OP's question; lack of decent marketing. That's all there is to it.

Compare Halo 2, 3 and the Gears of War launches against any of those titles mentioned and... well, if I have to spell it out for you...

Not alot of people have PS3s. It's that simple.

EDIT: What Twist said is true. The marketing sucks. Which is too bad because games like Resisteance 1 and 2 and Killzone 2 should be owned by every PS3 owner. NOt even MGS4 got any good advertisment.

Werd. They mention Mario and shit but they seem to forget how terrible GTA Chinatown Wars and Madworld did. A tried and true property and a new IP.

I just saw my first commercial for he Conduit. It's been out for a few days and now I'm seeing adds.

I saw Smash Bros adds like months before the release. Of course first party is going to be stellar launches Nintendo and Microsoft shove it our face more than a pornstar at the AVA awards.

I Really prefer new IPs. And I can't express that enough. To be honest, there is a little place in the back of my mind that worries me because it's starting to get bored with video games, and the only times that fire is rekindled is when I play something new. It doesn't have to be 100% new, but at least introduce something I haven't done before or seen before. If this dies, so does my interest in games. There's always reading books again.

Gran Turismo Prologue did pretty God damn well considering it's basically a demo.

So basically what the article suggests is that they should just remilk for profit. Makes sense for a company, but it sucks for the sake of advancement. They should have launched the PS3 with a World War 2 game, and then released one every 5 months. They'd have so much money that they could release a handheld that only plays Space Marine shooters and World War 2 games, and make even more money.

That's almost word for word what I was going to say. Kotaku says "managing to consistently find critical success while being, relative to their exposure and advertising backing, commercial flops" but my first thought was "what exposure"?

Sony has had some games that really are a big deal, but I don't think they've done a very good job of letting the public know they are a big deal.

Well they are referencing first party new IPs only.
GTA is a bit of weirdness because it's an adult game on the DS which is new territory. And sorry Wii faithful, but the my opinion is that the sales of Mad World, No More Heroes, and even Zelda: Twilight Princess are indications that the Wii is not a system for anything but casual gamers.

    Right.

And I counter by saying it doesn't matter what it is, it fails with advertising and hype.

There were other M-Rated games on the DS before it. Lots of them new properties.

But carry on Fanboy. Carry on. I refuse to turn this into a console bashing thread.

Why is it blaming the fact that they're new IPs for selling so poorly when Hotshots Golf and Ratchet and Clank are sequels from previous generation consoles and have done worse then most of the new IPs? And that the best selling exclusives are new IPs. And that they completely left off MGS4?

In the end, it's because Microsoft had more consoles out at the time they launched Gears or War, and did so with a massive marketing push, that it was so well received. There was no competition, it was either that or nothing. It has nothing to do with the quality of the games themselves, but the business practices, marketing and timing of the games in question.

    I <3 System Wars!

Sony is failing on 2 fronts, no marketing and no price cut. once they figure this out, they will move a TON of units.

I have owned all 3 systems. My PS3 is my baby. I will keep it until it dies. Then get another one.

I predicted that you would have nothing that had not been heard before or would be pertinent as to why the posted titles are underperforming. I have yet to see you post you said theories, as provocative as you claim them to be.

So, sir, I put to you, that you have, indeed, proven my point.

And I also :lol  at you for claiming I am some kind of PS3 fanboy. I leave that to Windcharger.

    Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
    Dementium
    Touch the Dead

    That's "lots"?
Did any of them sell particularly well?
