This should've been posted a couple days ago, but I figured someone else would do it.

I’ll be stunned if the US price ends up being that high.

And if it is I'll also be not getting one.

Typically the price on electronics in Euros is the same number as in Dollars, despite the difference in exchange rate. That means it'll probably cost between about $500 and $600, not between $600 and $700... but that's still insane.

If that holds true (which I doubt it will), so much for my thinking that this might be the gen I pick up a Sony system.

I also doubt that it'll actually be that high. I bet it'll actually retail for $400, and they'll either (a) take the loss for the sake of staying relevant in the console wars, or (b) make it up somewhere else, perhaps by not dropping the price on the PSP, or by delaying the inevitable PS4 a year or two.

You all also DO realize that this could be intentional misinformation, right?

I would hope so, but I imagine a high-ranking executive at Sony would know more about it than we would.
While I've become accustomed to having Sony flat out lie to me, I don't think this is the case. Otherwise I don't think Sony's PR spin doctor guys would be so quick to try and make a save.

It wouldn't necessarily be out of order. Release a price "accidentally" or one that was "misunderstood", then sit back and monitor the response.

Then, if negative enough, when you do release your actual price - which under normal circumstances is still way too f**kin high - you'll have duped us all into thinking "Well, that's not as bad."

    See: PSP.

ummm, not it isn't... The premium bundle for the 360 is 500 CAD. The leaked price for the ps3 is equal to up to 875$ CAD with current exchange rates.

Don't get me wrong. The xbox 360 is expensive for sure, but it's about 2/3 the cost of the ps3.

I wounder if this is actually the price that sony will be paying on each console to produce them though. Hence if they do what other companies do, and just take a loss on the initial runs of the system, making it up in software/accessory sales, the price we will be paying will be less

What was it, the PS9 in that old PS2 commercial? PS12? Maybe I'll start saving up for that one now. Holographic music and games? Sounds fun, sign me up.

Hmm. That sounds underhanded enough for Sony, but I could still see it backfiring. Enough people hear about this and decide they're going to get a 360 right now, or start warming up to the Revolution a bit more because of the perception that they can't afford a PS3, and then when it is released at a lower price, they've already lost a ton of potential customers.

'Exchange rates' are often set at 1 Euro = 1 Dollar, even though thats not actually the case. So if it's 599 Euros then it won't be any more than 599 Dollars.

That said If it costs more than $450 i shall eat my hat*

I'd guess Sony are willing to take a big loss on the console itself not just becasue of projected game sales, but also in the hope that people will move up to HDMI comptable TVs

(HDTV, has yet to gain a foothold in a lot countries.)

*note that i reserve the right to claim a Snickers bar as my hat.

If that is the true price, forget about me purchasing one. I'll just get a PS2 instead.

I forgot to say; it's probably designed to keep MS guessing about what sort of price cut they should respond with.
