So I have been opening some repaints today, and I have to say, it bothers me that with repaints they don't give you other accessories. I don't mind the repainted figure, but to give them the same accessories seems like a cop out.

For instance, why the hell would space case have the same type of trident as Terradive? If they just changed the weapons in addition to the head, I think this would go a Looooooong way.

From a strictly financial purpose I understand, but then I would ask, why not see if another figures weapon may work with the repainted character.

To give credit also, it was nice that Grapple came with a ladder, but I don't think they had a choice on that one. How could they get a way with Grapple without a ladder?

    [Edit from later post]
I just thought of what would be an ideal thing for a repaint. It would take the designer time to think the multiple figures they would want out of this. So here are my thoughts and we can add to this:

1- New Head if needed to represent the figure (seekers don't need this)
2- New weapons if needed (Null rays differ on seekers and coneheads, or the Blurr/Drift example)
3- A slight transformation difference to the figure make the figure look different then the original painted figure (think Punch/Counterpunch or Sunstreaker/Sideswipe)
    - I always thought that Drift, needed the slightest mistransformation to make him look more like drift. But the mistransformation I used is not enough, but works in pictures.

    That would be ideal.

Most of the time the weapons are cast on the same sprue as the figure itself. Which is why they can't really mix and match as it'd either require retooling the molds or swapping parts around during assembly (which I can imagine could get messy quite fast).

Well, only until just recently are they thinking that much forward. Look at Generations Drift/Blurr.

But it doesnt really bother me all that much. Yeah it would be cool if all repaints had new weapons, but it's not a deal breaker.

Well couldn't they do the heads and the weapons together in the same cast. Most repaints tend to have new heads.

True. Not saying it is a deal break. Not by far, or I wouldn't have those repaints. It would just be a nice added bonus that can add to a character and even their back story.

I mean, Terradive with a Trident, I could see. Space case, I would say need a laser pistol or something. How would some one dumb use a figting instrument that requires precision.

    Just being anal I guess.

I guess I look at it like the modern military. ALOT of people have the exact same weapon as the guy next to them. I think it works out fine.

Terradive's weapon is awesome so I can't complain. They do change the accessories other times, for example Specialist Ratchet comes with a different weapon than the regular release. So does Darksteel (even though he has trouble using them)

As for Grapple, yes, the could have made him a straight repaint. At least I can see it happening without them caring too much. Thankfully they did remold him.

I admit however that I only have one x2 mold (I don't like buying repeated molds, I just pick the color scheme I like better/is available at the moment. For example Banzaitron over Bludgeon). I got Armor Topspin because he was on sale, so he servers as Twintwist in my collection. Also, he's awesome, and together they have a shitload of 5mm peg weapons.

Why... not? Space Case has no real fictional appearances, except for the time that he appeared with a Trident.

Before the toy was even announced.

    Just sayin'.

If you want the figure to be G2 accurate and have an arm gun... well... then just switch around the hands/engines. Call it good.

Most of the time a figure's weapons are made at the same time the figure is. If they gave Space Case another figure's weapon, then they'd have to print off that many of the other figure to give it to Space Case.

Plus, the best weapons are those that integrate with the alt-mode. Even simple blasters like Jazz or Prowl fit in the alt-mode. I would hate the return of G1-style "Put the weapons on the side and lose them while you display the vehicle mode."

Hasbro are getting much better at this, it's all about how the plastic sprues are tooled, this is why we are getting repaints with new heads in the last few years. The reason the exclusive Stepper is so expensive is they've had to use molds from another toy to give him the target master.
The other option of course would be to take a leaf from the days of gang-molding, and have two figures swap weapons for the repaint, but then people would complain that there might not be anywhere to store the weapons in alt. mode.

Just buy a weapon pack, or do the above option yourself once you get the toy home.

The only thing that bothers me about repaints is when they have a $340 price tag and a Botcon logo slapped on them.

Many DOTM repaints come with different MechTech weapons and Cyberverse Prime, for example, has different repaints with different accessories (jet-pack & simple guns, trailer, swords & ROTF inspired guns). So Hasbro IS getting better at this kind of thing.

Not exactly. I will say that there is a new trend towards new heads but cant really say most repaints have new heads. In RTS and Generations they were great about new heads but the movie line still sees repaints that are just repaints for the most part. That being said i hop that we see TF Prime follow the trend of new heads or weapons for repaints.

isn't Blurr/Drift a prime example of heads and weapons swap factored in the mold creation?

One of the best really. But this does not happen often still. Like i said in my earlier post Generations and RTS seem to be trending more towards new heads and weapons for redecos and i hope to see this continue as a trend.

I'm just thankful that we're finally getting different head designs and even slight remolds sometimes on repaints.
