The 6-note leitmotif was written by Elfman for the Burton Batman movie. They used a reprise of those notes for the B:tAS opener.

Then Shirley Walker wrote a slightly different one that consists of 9 central notes that was used from then on.

Sub-Zero was one awesome movie. I actually thought that it made up for Batman & Robin it was so good.

    Yeah, that's Mark Hamill.

and I liked Sub Zero a lot, but I like Phantasm a teensy bit better.

i have the 1989 Batman score, and i consider it a masterpiece of composition. each individual track is its own self contained story, not just a mental cue to a particular scene.

The soundtrack to Mask of the Phantasm is pretty remarkable as well. Shirley Walker took great care (imo) to remain true to the Burton-verse and yet maintain the film noir feel of MotP.

damn shame we lost her and her talents.

Return of the Joker blows Mask of the Phantasm and Sub-Zero out of the water, as good as they are.
