So, the other day I was driving home, barely listening to the radio. I was alone with my thoughts, running on my kick-ass self driving auto-pilot. While I was thinking, I got on the topic of free will. I was thinking about a deterministic world vs. a non-deterministic world and I decided, given a choice, I'd choose free will.

A couple minutes later I started actually listening to the radio. The song that was playing was playing while I was thinking about free will and one of the lines the singer shouts is "I choose free will!"

In other words, I was not thinking about free will of my own will.

Is that a brain fuck or what?

So you'd choose free will, if you had the freedom and will to choose it?

Right, free will's a funny thing. Too bad we chose not to have it.

Where can I get this free will? Target and TRU is charging $5.99 for will. I'd like to get will if I can get it for free.

I could probably send you to GOOD will, but free? No one will just give away something so precious.

    You could try manufacturing it.

Yep. Listening to Rush gets you thinking like this. It's also good music to read a lot of sci-fi to. :)

I personally don't see anything wrong with determinism.

On a side note; I love Rock music, but I hate Rush. Does that make me a bad person?

I read a book about Free Will and Determinism. Its a tough read and I had to take breaks because my head would spin. Basically the argument is that Free Will (meaning choice) cannot be proven that it was a choice, since you can't prove you were going to choose something else, thus it is Determinism. But it goes both ways and both arguments are solid so its just really confusing.

    Clever girl.

I honestly think that the deterministic nature of the universe is what makes science possible. Certain circumstances lead to certain results. Hell, Psychology itself wouldn't exist if the choices we humans make weren't so easily predictable.

One of the lyrics in the song is: "If you choose not to decide/You still have made a choice!"

Isn't being given the opportunity for free will somewhat of an opposite to actually having it? If it's given, it wasn't yours to begin with.

Rush is one of the best 'thinking man's' bands of all time. Once you accept Geddy's higher-pitched vocals, they (Rush) are perfection incarnate.

    Then you'd be plucking grapes.

    ...

Oh, that was such an aweful and obscure joke.

    No, "plucking."

See, the Latin verb "Carpere," which is used in the phrase "carpe diem," which is often translated "Seize the day" does not actually mean "seize." A better translation would be "pluck," "pick," or "harvest." It has to do with getting grapes and fruits and crops and stuff. FosterLager seizing free will.

    This.

If you listen to "Red Barchetta", you may find yourself driving faster.
