Hi everyone, new guy here but not new to TF. I have a question for some of the elders around here.

Is it worth it to come to Botcon alone? It will be in driving distance of me this year, and it will be my first big con. I've always wanted to go but never did. But I won't be bringing anyone, as none of my friends are even remotely interested in TF enough to attend a convention. I won't know anyone there since I mainly lurk on the various boards. Opinions?

Of course it worth it. Especially since your so close. You don't have to worry about airfare. You have guys coming down from Cal for this.

Heck, I flew into Chicago a few years ago for Saturday's events, then flew home that same evening. Don't worry about not knowing anyone...you'll have at least one thing in common w/ everyone else there. You'll be surprised how easy it is to strike up a conversation w/ a total stranger there...you might even find yourself talking about something other than Transformers!

You're going to a place where you are guaranteed to have something in common with every single person there. Don't worry about not knowing anybody, just strike up a conversation with people while you're there. You'll make friends soon enough.

    QFT,

some of the people who I have on my IM contact lists are people who dared to just say "Hi, hey join us for a seat" I go to BotCon stag all the time and I'm not worse for wear

Hell last year I struck up random conversation with people in the waiting line

Don't let not knowing anyone yet stop you, d00d. there's always a "what the hell do you lok like" thread that pops up before each Botcon; just wander up to us all and say hi.
Seriously, Botcon is a brilliant way to meet new friends. Like Shaun said, I have people on my MSN list I met there and just kept in touch with. :)

Yet my MSN list lacks your name Draven despite meeting and hanging with you TWICE :cry

    Care to rectify that? ;)

I cn't make it to Botcon this year, or for the next 5 for that matter. Once I finish all of my studies I will go done for fun. Till then it's Transformerscon for me.

I would say go for it! So long as you aren't shy about introducing yourself to others, I found that everyone I started talking to was really nice and friendly.

I'm going alone and I'm from the Netherlands, which is not exactly closeby. I'm terrible at striking up conversations or idle chitchat or socialising in general, but there will be events.

Definately worth it. Botcon 04 was my first TF convention. I flew from NH to Pasadena and I didn't know a sole. Once I got there and registered, it took like 10 minutes before I was in a group of people having a good time.

Sadly I never thought to inquire about any TFW members that were going to be there, but that was quickly rectified by Botcon 05.

I went to the 2002 convention by myself, and it was my first time. There I met a bunch of people who would become completely awesome friends that I still get to hang out with at conventions to this day. I drove by myself and had to reserve my own room that was not part of the convention hotel, luckily Tricky Disco had done the same, so we got to hang out a bit and became great friends. It was at the arranged TFGen3 dinner and bowling night that I met most of the people that to this day I would still call my friends.

It is DEFINITELY worth it to go, no matter the cost!

I'm dealing with the same dilemma. My girlfriend just found out that she can't get the needed time off work, so I either go solo now or not at all. As much as I'm sure that I would be fine enough on my own, I don't know if I want to wander around getting excited by stupid geeky things by myself, hehe. Plus paying for our reserved hotel room for 5 nights with no one to split the costs with is gonna make costs kinda steep. And no, I don't exactly want to try and find some stranger to split it with since you never know what kind of freak you could end up with until it's too late.

But the good news is that if I decide to back out, I'll cancel my reservation at the Biltmore and a room will become available for someone still needing one :)
