Soldier dies after receiving smoker's lungs in transplant - CNN.com
That's gotta be the dumbest hospital ever
Or one just desperate for organs so that they can save lives.
Feel bad for the dude's family.
ultimate second hand smoke
Stoopid hospital! Feel bad for the guy's family though.
This is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. How the heck did they get a smoker's lungs for donated organs? Didn't this spell "DEATH" right away?
So how many millions more dead due to smoking do people need before the world comes to their senses and understands that smoking is unhealthy?
Oh God, here we go again.
My idiot-meter just blew up. Jesus Christ, shouldn't they tests people for drug-use or any diseases before they donate organs? This just frigging disgusts me. This reminds me of how my Grandmother died of cancer.
Or maybe more high-horsed non-smokers should be donating their organs instead?
Yep. Here come the high horses.
Oh, for sure - all the idiots who think cigs have vitamins and minerals and healthy treats need to wake up. The world is chock full of them!
my wife actually works in the transplant business and yes hospitals are pretty desperate. Mistakes are all too common and donors will actually accept organs from people that are hepatitis positive, chronic drug users, etc.
I don't see what's so "dumb" about this. They were faced with a difficult choice, between giving the patient a set of lungs that might develop disease later or holding out for a "healthy" set to become available and hoping the patient didn't die on the waiting list. They weighed the odds, made a choice and unfortunately they (and the patient) lost this one. As the article mentions, donor organs are screened before being transplanted, so it's not like they gave the recipient a set of lungs that were already cancerous. And smoking isn't a guarantee of developing lung cancer, even heavy smoking; lifetime risk of lung cancer in smokers is less than 20%.
What's really sad is that the rate of organ donation is so pathetically low that hospitals need to scrounge for potentially questionable organs in order to have even a chance at saving lives.
Exactly. All the whiners should put their money where their mouths are and start making sure their family members know their wishes regarding donating their organs. It's as much the fault of jackasses who never do so as anyone else's.
What's even more sad is the lack of reading comprehension skills. It seems to be a growing epidemic.
Its tragic for sure. I think everyone, unless its against religeous beliefs, should be a donor. Tere is no reason not to be.
The soldier would have died even sooner if he didn't recieve the tainted lungs. Simply an unlucky combination of exceptionally bad organs and the medication he was on.
i think the main point is that someone who smokes shouldn't donate their lungs, for very obvious reasons. unless they were all that was available and the one who needed the transplant opted to take the lungs, in which case i have nothing to say.
