    Solar Powered Airplane Successfully Flies Through the Night | Universe Today

    Very cool stuff. I particularly like the fact that it's solar cells are capable of generating more energy than the motors consume when exposed to sunlight.

    They've been toying with this kind of thing for decades now, using solar, transmitted microwave, and other such "radiative" power sources. I guess the technology has gotten to a point where its now a lot more feasible, and that's a good thing, both for raising awareness of the capabilities of solar technology, as well as developing new technological solutions for the communications industry.

    I hope that their plan to fly 24 hours straight works. If so, we're this much closer to a better method of flight.

    They did manage to keep the plane up for more than 24 hours, but the thing to remember is that this is an extremely light plane, designed to have engines with very little power requirements, and does not carry any load besides what is needed to fly.

    This is an impressive achievement, but there's a long way to go (if ever) before these principles can be applied to worthwhile uses.
