Stunning. Absolutely impeccable. Has got me to like Jetfire far more than any official publication ever has. Also, Snapdragon! Ye-heah!

Thank you, guys, from all of us. It is amazing the story-potential that these science-mechs have: Perceptor, Jetfire, Shockwave, Fistfight, Octane... and it only make sense. How can such an advancend and sophisticate species not be based on science?

These SoD stories are great, but in what continuity are these set? I'm getting both IDW and Dreamwave War Within references, but those two are not in any way related.

While both illuminating and satisfying to read, I cannot help but feel that even the best efforts of the Prime or good intentions of many other bots will be for naught. I see the slippery slope Cybertron is coming to and am helpless to stop it. Great job with the writing! And the artwork is first rate, it leaves most everything else in the dust!

They are set in a "new" continuity that incorporates The War Within miniseries and the series that Simon Furman wrote for IDW (from Infiltration to Revelation/Maximum Dinobots).
All his Spotlights are included, and so is Spotlight: Kup.

Thankfully, Furman carefully avoided a direct clash between these continuities, as in the IDW he never wrote sequences set in the same time sequence of War Within.
There are some continuity issues that we're slowly "fixing". See for instance our one-pager Mosaic: Supreme Recall for the Gestalts topic.

    Notes!

    Page 1.

Jetfire's experiments with the Cerebroshell are mentioned in War Within: The Dark Ages.

By saying "science and technology development are the key to freedom for each of us", Jetfire is paraphrasing his own G1 Marvel profile motto.

This story takes place after the Liberation Epoch and Act II of SoD: Starscream.

Perceptor became Head Master of his Science Academy in SoD: Shockwave/Soundwave.

Even though Grimlock was one of the Protoform in the Infiltration Batch, his Spark Core is a recycled one.

Who is the mistery warrior show in the bas-relief? See the King Predator art for more details.

When he's not busy training Protoforms, Professor Kup has a civilian job in Indiana Jones style. It is encouraging to know that such an old mech can have some interests outside war.

See more of Professor Kup's adventures in Short Story: Remembrances.

Sludge belongs to the Dynobots (War Within: The Dark Ages), while Kup and Ironhide are part of the Lighting Strike Coalition (War Within vol. 1). Both these teams have Grimlock as a leader.

The event about Grimlock meeting Slag for the first time "in the barracks" (Maximum Dinobots #2) can be set during the battles of the Liberation Epoch.

    Page 2

Shockwave has been gathering scientists since the beginning of SoD: Shockwave/Soundwave.

Fistfight is Action Master Shockwave's partner. Don't miss his adventures in the Short Stories.

Jetfire's partnership with Shockwave is mentioned in War Within: The Dark Ages.

The mech beig beaten by Grimlock is a Battlecharger known as Basket Case. His color scheme is based on G2 Space Case.

    Page 3

Jetfire's forearms host a complete set of hi-tech tools.

Whose is the voice commenting the match? The answer will come in a quite funny Short Story.

Grimlock and Starscream's Arena nicknames are respectively Badass and Screamer (no surprises here).

The audience is composed of repainted Go-Bots.

A reference about Grimlock beating Starscream in the Arena can be found in War Within vol. 1.

    Page 4

For the first time, the main characters of this chapter appear in their cybertronian alt modes (both based on Don Figueroa's designs).

The Propaganda Symbol, featured in all the related secret cybernet files, will of course become the Decepticon symbol. Its origins will be explained in SoD: Ratbat.

Who is the main author of the propaganda speeches? We challenge you to find him out among the most prominent Decepticons, by analyzing the subtext!

Wow. The drawings are nifty, but the story is Grade-A. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Oh, I see. Well, so far you've done an excellent job in fleshing out your own universe from the combination of both continuities.

Actually there is something I've been curious about, and that's if you're going to explain the genesis of Nova Prime's ideology and where it came from. Just as well, I had an idea that I've been toying with that might be interesting for a Kup one-shot that might play into something bigger.

Mind if I send you a PM?

    Thanks, on behalf of everyone!

Well, we are giving all the pages the same final format ;)
But it would be a huge book indeed!

    More Notes.

    Page 5

Many special guests for a page that, just for once, is not split in the usual two halves (Jetfire/Grimlock).

In panel 1, Triggerhappy is backed up by nameless building vehicles.

The primitive is the sky is a generic beast-machine.

The background is a technorganic shore (not the first technorganic landscape in our saga).

In panel 2, Seaspray is backed up by Scoop and Backstreet.

In panel 3, Sentinel Prime carries on his planetary renewal plan described in SoD: Sentinel Prime.

In panel 5 & 6, the structure goes back to the usual Jetfire/Grimlock contraposition. This time, Grimlock comes first, though.

    Page 6

Even though Grimlock and Jetfire joined the Underground Movement, they continue their old lives as well.

See the Arena fighter files for The Terrorcon.

The Gladiator and Soundwave are two of the main stars of our saga. More about them in SoD: Shockwave/Soundwave.

Starscream's plans for Grimlock were revealed in War Within vol 1. #0.

More about Starscream in his SoD chapter.

    Page 7

See Arena fighter files for: The Reptile (Snapdragon).

In Shockwave's personal continuity, this sequence takes place after his "Ebony Knights experience", as seen in Act II of SoD: Shockwave/Soundwave (more about this in the upcoming Act III).

Jetfire's half of the story continues in Grimlock's half. A key moment is coming.

The commenting voice balloons have the "radio transmission" style because the match is being broadcast on the cybernet.
This is why the Arenas are not as crowded as one might expect: most of the audience is watching through remote connection.

    Page 8

Panel 7: an hint to the identity of the commenting voice.

Another "The Simpsons" tribute. After Mixmasters as Doctor Nick Riviera in Transmutated, now it's the turn of the commenting voice, which does an impression of Kent Brockman.

It finally happened: the "incident with the cerebro shell". See War Within: The Dark Ages #6, page 11.

There is now a further reason for the vengeance that Grimlock exacted on Shockwave at the end of Spotlight: Shockwave. A reason that Grimlock never revealed to his Dynobot comrades.

    1) Cover C for SoD: Jetfire/Grimlock, by Yu Hye Shim (visit her page for the unlettered version). Jetfire and Grimlock are "pawned" by the evil mechs that hide in the foreground of the cybertronian society.

    2) Swindle study, by Gianluca Gamba, for the upcoming SoD: Swindle - "The cause of war" (working title).

    3) More art in the Characters Art Gallery, featuring Moonracer, Nova Prime, Chromia, Nemesis Trannis, Shockwave, Blaster.
