So, why didn't they use those Energon Detectors?

Well, we saw them at one point picking up the Dreads on the highway, but after that...nothing.

For example, couldn't they use it to have picked up Sentinel's energon signature? Given the sky from Nest headquarters to the Lincoln Memorial, it looks like they gave him a 4-5 hour head start before locating him.

Sentinel laid waste on the NEST HQ, they were too busy trying to recover from the strike to track them down.

They might also cloak their Energon signatures [Starscream comments on how The Twins and BB cloaked their Energon signatures] and Soundwave might as well hack those things.

They must be short range, considering Energon is sort of a new concept to humans, they probably don't have the means or technology for long range usage yet.

Like when they were in Chernobyl, they only started getting readings from the Driller when it practically underneath them

Energon detector might as well be Sector 7's radiation detection technology refined by the Autobots.

Project Black Knife found some of the Seekers but was inexplicably not pursued.

Simmons certainly wasn't cleared in a lot of things. Sector 7 higher ups may have been aware of efforts to subvert both nation's space programs yet played low key so as to not blow the Allspark's location.

I got the impression that they only show up as Transformers on Scanners when they are in robot mode, or maybe at very close range, or if they were using a Transformer ability like a weapon. otherwise if they are just in a car mode they may be hard to track - I think an example of that is Mudflap & Skids in the Desert couldn't be tracked down by Starscream as they were in car mode.

That said Ironhide is supposed to be able to 'Smell' other Transformers regardless.

Now that I think of it, there seemed to be a large amount of Police Cars in the area.

Maybe there was a cut scene where they DID use the detectors, and upon finding 3 signatures in the area that were not the main Autobots, put the area on lockdown.

I believe human technology isn't that effective when dealing with foreign forms of matter. Starscream in ROTF made the comment about how Bumblebee and The Twins were able to cloak their energy signatures.

    This.

You'd think there'd at least be a "Jurassic Park glass of water" type moment where the detectors beep louder and faster when something (mayhaps the Driller or even the entire Decepticon fleet) comes near.
