You mean G1? I think the cartoon models of Ratchet and Ironhide were made the way they were was because the toys looks so lame. The toys came first, then came the character models.

Those toys were originally designed as mechsuits for Diaclone drivers.

I always assumed the characters in the show were overhyped on the show to help sell the crappy toys

I used to think they suck as well. But now actually owning them for a few years, they've grown on me. The toys are pretty cool.

It should be the other way around. The cartoon designs look nothing like the toys (except in car mode).

    I do too.

Don't get me wrong, I've always wanted an Ironhide and Ratchet that matched his G1 persona (at least they looked similar in the first few issues of the comic), but I see the toys as sort of a novelty.

not complaining. just asking a question. maybe someone here had some insight on why the toys were made to look like they did.

this is a discussion forum. if you can't add to the discussion why even input?

They were from a japanese toy line by Takara where they were piloted rather than sentient. Hasbro brought it over as Ironhide and Ratchet.

There's your answer. Originally, they had pilots who sat where the face stickers on the TF versions were put.

what i find funny as all hell is in the original Marvel comic started out using the toy models. then like 2 or 3 issues later without any explanation they look like their toon models

i was always pissed cause the toys looked nothing like their cartoon counterparts. but I loved the toys none the less. i just let my imagination fill the rest of the pieces in. the cartoon made me love certain toys, and these guys were a mainstay of characters that made the show.
