looks like it's a site that just makes it easy for people with different chat programs to communicate in the same place w/out having to download a new program.

and that just means you are logging off if you close the side

I use it because AIM, Yahoo, and MSN were all a pain in the ass to run simultaneously (that and multiple Yahoo accounts, and Google Messenger not being something I usually do). Now I have one giant ass buddy list in one window, I heart Meebo with a passion (been using it for three years now).

You use Meebo when you can't or don't want to download a messenger client. It's great for public computers, or any other computer you can't install software. As long as you have accounts for the different services you can use them through Meebo.

For your own computer you can use the Pidgen (Windows or *nix) client locally, which supports all the major messenger protocols (AIM,MSN,Google,Jabber, etc) simultaneously. For Mac users, there's Adium.

Pidgin is awesome. It's part of the PortableApps freeware flash drive software suite. (It's called Pidgin Portable in the menu)

So simple, so easy to use, and it'll archive your conversations and chats (on all messenger accounts!)

Takes a bit of time to start up at first. (A good 30-45 seconds loading time) But once running, it is rock steady. I have other messengers (which I use along side Pidgin when need be) and their loading time isn't even half, but the price you pay for that is stability. Yahoo will freeze and crash and then not want to reconnect without me restarting the computer.

In fact, explorer (not I.E., the Windows shell) crashed and a bunch of programs shut down, while others stayed on. Pidgin never went offline or shut down even once throughout the entire ordeal. It was amazing.

Funny thing portable apps was introduced a few months ago in the lab now everyone has a key with portable apps and one with their regular crap.

Im particularely fond of bringing open office, and pidgin on me all times.
