I've been seeing these two things and something about the internet being destroyed. So, in layman's terms, what exactly is going on?

I just knew this was gonna get here...

SOPA basically is denying you the freedom of speech, and all major sites are against, so is Obama...

Prepare for an uprising of all the nerds who live in their mom's basements.

Google and Craigslist too. They haven't shut down, but they have put links to petitions on their front pages.

Even the founder of the internet has spoken out against these bills. They have good intentions, but the methods to go about them are very wrong. DNS blocking isn't compatible with comcast's new internet system for example.

It was created in the U.S., at ARPA/DARPA, but it wasn't founded, haha. I was just pointing out the funny choice of words there. :lol

Wow, I'm actually on time to comment in one of these threads before it gets locked. I should say something meaningful and insightful.

The problem with these laws is that your site can get shut down based on accusations and not actual fact. You then need to go to court to defend the right to get your site back up.

So it is the reverse of everything America is supposed to stand for. My dad comes from a communist country and tells me that he sees more communism in America today then he did when he left Romania in the 80s.

Let's see if he is right. If this bill passes, he will be.
