im under the impression that it was a vehicle. the concept art seemed to have a sort of cockpit thing going on and it appeared that shockwave would ride along inside it...but seeing as these are transformers it could very well be alive...what do you think?

 

I believe that the Driller is supposed to be some form of Cybertronian wildlife that Shockwave tamed and now controls like an attack dog.

now when you say "it is sentient" are you saying that as in it is your opinion that it is sentient or you actually know its sentient through some other means of info (movie novel, comics, etc?)

 

I think it is sentient on the level of a dog or cat and like above poster said Shockwave more than likely found a means to train it to follow his instructions.

 

Sentience just means possessing senses. And able to use them to interact with your environment.

If something feels pain, it is definitely sentient. So if Driller reacted in a painful manner to being shot/wounded, it is sentient. If it seemed to be autonomous and track down prey without Shockwave's command/control, it is sentient.

The question is though: Does it do either?

Sapience is the word that means "intelligent life". Humans are sapient. Dogs and cats are sentient. Humans are also sentient. TFs are sapient (and sentient as well. Sentience is really a big requirement for sapience).

 

I'd say it is sentient, and that "cockpit" is more of a "saddle."

i agree when it was damaged it thrashed around that tells most people including myself its alive as for the saddle and cockpit theory i think its actualy something shockwave made while "taming it"

It shows up in the movie prequel comics,Sentinel brings a sun to Cybertron, which awakens the planet a new rousing monsters like the driller from the depths. It trys to eat the hatchery,Starscream intervenes, and almost gets killed

 

A valid guess.

 

If you go by the novelization (a stretch I know) it is a one of many of it's kind from cybertron... My question is, how the hell did it get to Earth?!? Unless it had been there since before we had satellites and any kind of radar warning systems it would have set off one hell of an alarm...

In the game The driller was already with shockwave when he was in Cryo. So I'm guessing that when shockwave came to earth he probably crashed with that thing, and the subject of it being sentient? Well In the movie and the game, whenever it's hit, It reacts to it. Hell, It even protects shockwave whenever you knock him around enough in the game. lol so I'm pretty convinced the driller is his guard dog.
