For those of you who use Youtube:

I was on Youtube and I got a message from one of my friends, it was a rather angry message in which she claims that I sent her a chain letter with a load of other usernames attached to it. But the thing is I didn't actually send her a chain message, there's nothing in the sent section of my inbox and I have absolutely no idea what she's talking about. She didn't even tell me what the message said!

I'm worried that if I tell her that I didn't send the spam message she won't believe me and think that I'm lying, and I really don't want to fall out with this person over something I did not do. What would be the best course of action to take? Has this happened to other people, or am I just victim to a hacker?

Tell her you didn't send it. Even if she doesn't believe you, at least you tried, and there's a chance she might believe you after all. Not saying anything won't do anything to convince her.

Easy, just tell her you didn't do it. If she's really your friend she'll believe you. I would suggest changing your email password though.

I concur. It's not like email spoofing is a new thing...

Your friend must be new to the internet? I thought everyone knew that when you get a nonsense message or advertising from a friend, it means that they were hacked. Happens to me all the time...I once got an explicit male-enhancement ad sent to my WORK email by a relative. Naturally, I knew it was unintentional, and she was angry that someone was using her email to send spam.

She's only been on Youtube since July of this year, so yes she is rather new. I've told her that I have no idea about the chain letter (so far she hasn't answered back) and I've changed my Youtube password and my personal E-Mail password, but is there much else I can do to stop this from happening again?

It's not your job to care what she thinks about something that has nothing to do with you. Why is it even an issue?

Tell her you didn't do it and move on.

This. She's pissed over a chain letter? Life is gonna bite her in the ass in a few years.

Well, you can tell her that and also ask her if she can show you the email headers. That will tell you if it actually came form the mail service provider that you are using. Email can easily be spoofed and can be taken as if it came from you.

It would help to run an anti-malware program frequently, if you're not doing that already. MalwareBytes is a good free one. I usually run it at least once a week and any time I go to a suspicious site or get questionable pop-ups, and I haven't had any trouble with being hacked that I know of (knock on wood).

Hopefully your friend will understand that it's a common problem.

She's in love with you and looking for a way to break the ice. She's hoping you'll feel bad and take her out to dinner which will blossom into true love.

Send her another chain letter instead.

I'd tell her you didn't send it. The truth is always best.
