Went to go for my road test today after having a permit for almost 2 years. First thing you have to do is park and I just barely nicked a cone. I'm definitely not a happy person right now. Any of you guys mess up on your first attempt?

I hit a curb turning right on my first attempt, but I was so nervous. Passed it my 2nd time. That was 10 yrs ago, oh man.

I think my nerves got to me. I can usually park with ease.

I only failed it once. My stomach was a ball of nerves while the intructor sat next to me for a long time (he didn't say or write anything down). I was beginning to think that he expected me to do something, so I put the car in R and commenced the parallel parking portion of the test. It was a clean park job, but the instructor looked at me when I was finished and said: "First of all, I didn't tell you do to anything."

We went on to do the driving portion, but my fate had already been sealed.

In retrospect, I was a dumbass kid that jumped the gun. If it wasn't for that, I would've gotten it on my first try.

I think I hit a curb, did a lousy job at parallel parking, and some other stuff, but I still passed. My driving instructor was awesome.

A cone? Don't you guys have your tests out in traffic?

Try driving a manual in heavy rush hour traffic before performing several manoeuvres on a real road. After passing your computer theory test of course. Getting a driving license in the UK is a real money pit.....especially if you fail first time.

It was parking. And to my knowledge most places in the US have courses instead of the road. I've driven on a "real road" plenty of times though. I'm a great driver and I drive in busy traffic and highways all the time with my learners permit. Today I just had some bad luck.

Yeah, that sucks, MV - but don't sweat it too much.

I failed on my first attempt because I didn't yield to oncoming traffic on a left-hand turn. I mean - I didn't cut anyone off or anything, it wasn't even close - but I should have waited for that car to prove I knew the rules. I passed on my second attempt no problem.

I passed the first time, thankfully, although ironically I thought I'd do horribly on the parallel parking section when in the end I ended up loosing more on the driving section due to accidentally speeding (not my fault it was an extremely short section of road that didn't have a speed limit sign, and I was only over by 6 anyway) and parallel parked flawlessly.

My most vivid memory of the experience, though, was the instructor I was assigned, who was a highway patrol woman. I know cops need to be super-serious, but it was like I was testing with the most expressionless woman I've ever encountered.

It's an inconvenience, but now you'll have a better idea of what the test will be next time.

Last time I went to renew, I had to take a test again. I had been driving for 14 years by this point, and I failed the first time. It sucks, but it happens.

When you get really used to driving you tend to curve the rules a little because you aren't in a test environment and you need to go with the flow.
Unfortunately, the mannerisms and temperment of the tester can have an effect. I got knocked points for not stopping twice at a stop sign. I am serious. TWICE. It was an older gentleman, and he said "When making a left turn at a stop sign, you HAVE to stop twice. Once at the sign, then once again after you roll forward before you actually turn." Now, I was looking, but I only stopped once. I have never read that rule or heard about it ever again.

It took me 3 times. And I thought I did very well both of the first times. It's just kind of a rite of passage.

I passed my first time, but my younger sis (only 19 months younger so I had to wait for her) failed the first time. She could parallel park. She was so mad that passed that she went back the next day and passed.
