Seeing as what the real Third Party companies actual do is run the factories that produce Hasbro and TakaraTomy products, Transformers or otherwise. Is there any chance we can start refering to these not-Hasbro/TakaraTomy Transformers toys as simply "Unofficial"?

    "Unofficial TF product"

    "Unofficial TF toy company"

"Third Party" implies that these companies (FansProject, iGear, etc.) are authorized by contract to produce Transformers products, which we all know is clearly not the case.

Anyway. I have an idea of how this thread is going to go, but I'm willing to give this a shot. Share those thoughts on the subject.

I just say "unliscensed 3rd party". That keeps it pretty clear.

your point is well made and logical.
in my case, the term "Third Party" comes from hearing it about the time Transformers came out back in the early 80s.

except i heard it used to refer to compnaies not authorized to create video games for the NES. (TENGEN comes to mind.)

so i use the phrase out of an embedded habit.

and really, it's so much easier for me to say "Third Party" than Unofficial Release" or whatever.

it isn't quite like the Toe-may-to/Tow-Mot-oh debate, but i see your point. can't argue against it. just can't stop my old habit, either.

Actually, that's a very good point which I think everyone needs to recognize. I can understand from video game terminology how "third party" came to be used to refer to Transformers goods not manufactured directly by Hasbro or Takara, but you're right that on the larger face of it, it's really not a correct usage.

I just felt it necessary to give you some credit for expressing this distinction, no matter how popular opinion may manifest itself as the thread continues.

    Yeah...
Yeah, I imagine that's how much of this thread is going to go. But I grew up calling Pluto a planet and now (or never was, depending on how you see it) a planet.

Habit and tendency is one thing, and perfectly understandable. But that's kind of what I'm challenging by bringing this up.

I agree, 3rd party should only refer to products authorized by Hasbro/Takara like the Imperial Fingerboards, Basic Fun keychains, etc.

    LOL "Contractually deprived."
Thanks. I do hope this thread turns out better than my "new decade" thread. Hahaha. But popularity wasn't something I had much luxury of, so I'll take heat if it comes down to it.

    :lol

I think it's too late though, the term is so ingrained into the fandom now it would take a small miracle to change it.

I always refer to them as "unlicensed"

edit - and while we're at it, can we stop referring to a 2nd use of a mold as "repaints?" While it's true that they have new paint apps, the majority of the color changes come from what the plastic is molded in.

Just need a moderator inboard with your thought process to change thread titles in the news and rumors forum. Overtime unofficial could become the norm.

Or we can turn it into a fun drinking game

The term third party is excepted on the boards for two reasons

    1. It was the first term that caught on so like CHUG it will be used.

    2. When we refer to a third party in a non commercial way we mean it to be someone not invovled in the situation. Like a Cop would be a third party in a dispute.

Oddly enough, I use "redeco" when appropriate as well. A "repaint" is what you can find in the Radicons subsite.
