It can also become public domain if things are not enforced. So a fan may not argue it, but who's to say EA wouldn't want to argue that since Capcom is not defending it, that they can't use it.

Remember, Hasbro almost lost the name Megatron. Granted that was a Trademark, but some copyrights rules are close to the same.

Mega Man will become public domain in the United States sometime in 2082. That's not a random number. Works for hire are copyrighted for 95 years from first publication, or 120 years from date of creation if it went unpublished for a long time. 1987 + 95 and there ya go.

No, the rules are very different. You don't have to keep a copyright in active use like a trademark, and it's very difficult to lose due to non-enforcement. First someone has to violate the copyright, then it has to be proven in court that the copyright holder was aware of the infringement, had the means to do something about it, and purposely did nothing within a "reasonable" amount of time (which can be several years). Even then it won't stick if the copyright holder can show that they had a good enough reason to not enforce their rights. They'd easily be able to justify ignoring fanworks or noncommercial piracy that fosters consumer goodwill and doesn't impact their revenue significantly. EA would have to make their own Mega Man game first, wave it in Capcom's face, and then not get sued over it for at least a decade, and then they could try to invalidate Capcom's copyright.

True, but Disney's still alive and kicking. I was speaking more around the terms of how books and songs and stuff become public domain, long after the person who created them kicked the bucket.

My understanding is that in the case of people dying it goes to their estate, copyright used to be only 14 years, extended if the author was still alive but that all changed many years ago...

    An interesting read here :

How Mickey Mouse Keeps Changing Copyright Law

Be interesting to see what happens when Mickey's time is up again :)

Considering that game companies rarely go out of business without having their IP purchased and that the commercial industry only started in the early 70s, we'll probably all be dead by the time anything substantial enters the public domain because of age.

Star Fox 2 is.. underwhelming to modern gamers sure, but I'm sure everyone would be amazed back in the day. However, like the original starfox I feel it's slightly ahead of it's time. It has a lot of ambitious things that I just don't think the SNES could handle well. If SF2 had been released on the N64 instead of SF64, I feel it would be considered one of the great groundbreaking games.

The structure of Star Fox 2 is the best part. The game creates a fantastic sense of urgency. I also like not being on rails.

The frightening thing is that in real life, the Borg would probably act like 4chan.

Well now that I see this SNES has been hacked I'm hoping I can add these titles to my console

    - Actraiser
    - Rock N Roll Racing
    - Mario All Stars
    - UN Squadron
    - Final Fight
    - Killer Instinct
    - Super Double Dragon

Well first things first I need to find one.

Well when I first saw it at the store I was shocked at how small the box was and when I opened it up and saw how tiny the console was it was pretty crazy. Spent hours playing Mario Kart and Street Fighter with my brother and it brought back lots of memories lol. To be honest there are a few games I'll probably never touch, mainly the rpg's but I'm looking forward to playing the rest.

yes but still no. I'm sure the guys I was behind still sold on their consoles at twice the price to people with no patience. Myself, I have mine from day 1 still playing it and a second I may need to post to my Dad. If I can get a UK one delivered to him I'll sell my second at cost. Well. Cost plus shipping, lol.

All I gotta say is Super Metroid is the GOAT hands down. I must've played and beaten this game dozens of times but haven't played it in probably over 20 years. Been playing non stop for the past couple days and I forgot how amazing it really is. Feels like my first time playing.

Super Metroid is one of my all time favorite games, so well designed and thought out, and the controls and graphics for the time are amazing as well
