I´m an ex-smoker but I often wonder from time to time how much harm the smoking did to my collection. Usually I smoked outside my room, but I wonder if the scent it was left on my clothing (wich was kinda strong) could pass to my collection aswell.

I smoke everyday...but not directly around my figures. I dont think they smell at all but maybe im not the right person to judge that.

Yeah some people do make a really big deal about that but I dont think I have ever noticed the scent of smoke on any toy now that I think about it.

It depends. If you smoke indoors and in the same room as your collection (the smell sticks to clothing, furniture, etc.), then you may have a problem with smells as well as nicotine stains developing on figures with white plastic. Smoking outdoors - or at least in a room separate from your collection - would obviously reduces this. I've bought figures that I could tell came from a smoker. The smell lingers, but it eventually fades away.

Yeah. I once bought a figure that was a custom and smelled like curry. After about 3 weeks, the smell went away.

I just think the smoke can cause color damage over time.

I bought the two Beast Wars combiners a while back. Both had been owned by a smoker and were covered in a heavy layer of... residue I guess, which made white look like the yellow of a cigarette filter. I disassembled them, washed them with soap and water, and they came out looking just fine. I don't recall much of a smell after the scrubbing.

i used to smoke in my house and never noticed the after smell but when i stopped smoking and moved to a new house and got all of my stuff in, everytime i walked into the room it smelled like an old convention hall.

i've also opened sealed ebay boxes that when opened reeked of smoke on the inside from the figure being in there.

I smoke even though I should be quitting; I used to smoke when I messed around with my figures, but I don't anymore. I've always smoke outdoors and haven't smelled any smoke on my toys ever.

Along the same idea, anyone know what kinda lights are ok to use? I have a few lighted display cases and was wondering if they were doing any harm.

I forbid my Transformers from smoking. Corrodes their ventilation ducts.

At Botcon I bought a G1 reissue Thundercracker for $15 cause the seller told me the previous owner was a smoker. My girl smelled it and she didn't smell anything. I smoke but never indoors.

I've occasionally bought figures from car boot sales that smell of smoke. Often the smell goes away after a few weeks.
    So romantic...

The smoke stain can remain there for quite a while with anything. I have bought one figure from a smoker, and as soon as you open the box, you can smell the smoke. There are ways to remidy it in a few threads (can't dig em up right now). I am not sure how permanent the staining is. I once pulled a knitting machine out of one of our rentals that a tennant left, and that thing still smelled of smoke 5 years after being removed from that environment. If you don't smoke, or havent smoked in years, it is something you can spell pretty easily on the figures. When I open a door to a rental where they either smoked or snuck in a dog, I can smell it before the door is even halfway open.

It often amazes me how smokers are oblivious to the smell. Like barrelks said, I can smell when someone has smoked anywhere in a house as soon as I open the door. I haven't bought enough used Transformers to run across one from a smoker's house, but knowing how it sticks to clothes I'm sure it would not be a pleasant scent.

I am not a smoker either and never have been. It is my understanding that if you want a Transformer in the best condition possible whether it be used or new that smoking + TF's = bad news. But it is nice to hear that some people have been able to remedy that situation.
