Fox stays with 'Simpsons' - Entertainment News, TV News, Media - Variety

For those to lazy to click.

"Cowabunga: Fox has given a two-season pickup to "The Simpsons," which will make the toon stalwart the longest-running scripted primetime skein in history.
Separately, CBS on Thursday confirmed it has ordered two more cycles of "Survivor" for the 2009-10 season.

The 44-episode order for "Simpsons" will take the 20th Century Fox TV series to an eye-popping 493 episodes and through its 22nd season, in 2010-11. That pushes the show past the 20-season mark held by CBS' "Gunsmoke" and NBC/CBS' "The Red Skelton Show."

Among primetime entertainment series overall, the Eye's "Ed Sullivan Show" still reigns (at least for a few more years) with 24 seasons.

Fox last month kicked off a yearlong "Simpsons" celebration dubbed "Best. 20 Years. Ever" to culminate on the 20th anniversary of the show's bow on Jan. 14, 1990.

CBS' renewal of "Survivor" covers the show's 19th and 20th editions, which will air in the 2009-10 season. "Survivor," which remains a top 10 player for the Eye, will hit its 10-year anniversary next year. Skein is jointly owned by exec producer Mark Burnett and CBS."

This makes the simpsons the last running american non-news prime time series. It beat out gunsmoke.

They'd better make this extended run pay off by writing good content.

If they are going on this much longer, why not make seven more episode so they can end at 500.

so they can get to 500, that'd be awesome, some of my earliest memories are off the Simpsons, and despite all the negativity from people, I still enjoy it. It's hard to hate something you grew up with... Don't have a cow man

Nicely said, even though I stopped watching it last year. However, I too grew up on the Simpsons, and I kept on watching well after many other folks stopped watching. While the writing and jokes were not as good as in earlier seasons, the episodes were still entertaining and far from terrible.

It was only after the airing of that 90's-esque episode did I stopped watching. For the episode pretty much bitch-smacked my childhood by changing the Simpson timeline all-around. That episode was definitely the weakest I had seen in years. :(

...anything close to good content will be cherry picked for future movies.
Instead, we get new opening credits.

It's hard to imagine Fox without the Simpsons honestly. Though I can't remember the last time I've watched the Simpsons.

Yeah, I haven't really watched Simpsons for a long time.

Has anyone noticed how none of the actors seem to be able to deliver jokes anymore? Like they always time it weirdly, with a sarcastic voice?

Meanwhile, Homer, when reached for comment, replied "Let me die... please..."

Dammit, Matt Groening, quit trying to bring back the Simpsons. Let it die in peace.

It really is time to let them go in peace. There are some occasionally good episodes, but when watching reruns on Tivo, we always seem to choose those in the 90's. Anyhow, I just walked down Lovejoy (and past Flanders) street here in Portland; it'll be sad when it ends.
