I always found this interesting since they are machines, but has it been ever explained? Reading foundations and Sentinal tells Optimus he's from his lineage. How is that possible for robots?

Well, maybe lineages are only a Prime Thing, as they have access to the AllSpark, they might [somehow] use it to create a special kind of hacthiling, that retains some of the traits of the Primes on personality and physical appearence.

When a man-robot and a woman-robot loves eachother very much, they spend some quality time together, the female gets fat for about 9 months and suddenly, a hatchling has spawned!

One of the robots inserts his USB drive into the other's USB port and then they share Files and data. Then 9 months later the receiving robot prints out a baby.

I don't understand why the idea of robot reproduction is so difficult to get your head around.

Picture the parents in question melding portions of their sparks to create a new spark. They then place this new spark in a sparkless protoform body, which then comes to life. The newborn is then raised like any other parents might raise their newborn. As the child matures into an adult, its spark is successively transferred into larger, more mature bodies, or perhaps its original form undergoes a series of upgrades.

Because Primus or whoever was responsible for creating them thought it would be a good idea?

I always felt the concept of Transformer reproduction was rather silly. The lineage of Primes, to me, suggested a line of warrior-statesmen who were selected to bear the Matrix of Leadership.

Fact is most of the fan base forgets that they may be called "robots" but they arent the text book defintion of robot, in many continuities.

Sure, the G1 toon showed they were artificially created by an other race, but for many in the G1 comic and the other continuities, TF's are the natural evolved form of life from their planet.

And yes, they have been known to re-produce by non mechanical means.
