Picked up a Desert Long Range from HTS while they had their sale. Gonna make him into Dusty. WIP pics! So far I've cut his pony tail, filled the hole in the back of his head, primed, and painted the hair and eyebrows brown. Also gave him Desert Wolf's pants. Now I'm just waiting for the clear coat to cure before I put all his accessories on him. Reference Pic: Character info. http://www.yojoe.com/action/02/dusty6.shtml
Looks ok but I don't really get a "Dusty vibe" from him. Still looks too much like Desert Long Range. Maybe if you found some kind of brown jacket or harness for him?
Is there any brown jackets or harnesses he could use that's in the S6 line? I can't think of any that are brown.
I have another problem with this RW, sorry! Dusty always struck me as an all-american apple pie kind of guy. Where'as the Longrange head strikes me as having very pronounced euro-features, very italian looking. Can you imagine a southern accent coming from the LongRange head? No. Also Dusty should not have the elvis-like sideburns of Longrange. I think the Inferno head w/ brown hair would of worked alot better. Also I think if you painted his face like this it would be awesome: http://www.fantasykat.com/shows/Images/gijoe/dusty.jpg
I was thinking about doing the face paint but then I realized I'd have to do the arms too which is just too much for me. Also the LR head was a last minute change. I was going to use Duke's head but the hat doesn't fit on Duke's head. And between an Inferno head or LR's I think I'd much rather have LR's.
Or... you could smudge some face paint on him like the original Dusty [A personal favorite]. Don't reckon he's one for Mutton Chops either. Edit: Well, maybe by being an echo I'll drive the point home.
The closest thing I think I would be able to pull off with the face paint thing would be to dry brush some brown and tan on. But then it would just make it look like he's got a bad complexion. As for the muttonchops, I could try to Dremel it off, but I'd risk ruining the head entirely, something I'm not too willing to risk right now. So unless I can find a spare head for free, I don't think I can make any changes as of right now without regretting it.
I didn't mean for that to sound forceful, if it did. I was just joking about my ideas echoing those already mentioned. But, yeah, its just not Dusty, good looking figure, but not Dusty. Could be too, that the whole get-up looks a little too trendy or "x-treme" for Dusty's personality. The later versions of Dusty from 99-02 had him in a beret, how about the new Flint head? Or am I making up figures that don't exist again? Or... a completely repainted Shockwave.
Well technically the S6 line is very trendy and extreme so I kinda call it a "modern S6 interpretation" of him. Duke got rid of the comb over for spiked hair, Heavy Duty got a 'do rag, Flint got slicked back long hair, etc, etc. So personally I feel that this is an interpretation, not a direct homage to the original Dusty. Come to think of it, I didn't even use the original Dusty for the reference pic.
Maybe its just cause he was a favorite character of mine, but Dusty soundn't give into trends or anime...
I'm sure a lot of the same could be said for all the other characters in S6 but Hasbro went that way with it. And just like the whole G1 argument for TFs, I'm glad they did go in a different direction.
Had to revisit this figure since I decided I wanted Long Range's head for my custom Airtight. So I put Duke's head on Dusty instead: Drybrushed dark brown and tan on his face and arms to give him a more "dusty" look.
heh. has CM posted yet? i wanna rub in his face his disdain for clothed dolls, i mean action figure. totally need some goggles tho.
