it was designed as an airport carry-on entertainment device.

It was put in to "attract kids".

You know the "Hey! Mom! Something's blinking over there! I want it!"

Didn't work well, which is why they stopped using them.

More packaging should contain blinking lights.

I figured it was a store security thing for some reason. Or a Cobra tracking device.....
If what DevilzFan said is true....I dunno....that seems a little underhanded to me. I dunno why...maybe it ain't, but still....something about just ain't cool to me.

It was just a failed marketing gimmick. Nothing underhanded about it.

a "BUY ME" flashing light would probably have been more effective

It definately worked as an attention grabber. First time I saw said blinky light I had to go and investigate it.

If you have to put blinking lights on your toys, you have bigger issues with your toys than just getting people to pay attention to them.

I remember seeing the blinkers and wondering why some had them and some didn't and thought it was some sort of marketing campaign I was unaware of. No idea it was something so blunt and overt. Comes off as desperate and for a major product and toy maker that's just weirdness.

I put it in my car so it looks like I have an active alarm.

    :lolol  That's awesome!

I first saw the blinking light in Arctic Duke's package. Honestly, I didn't think much about it. It's just a another thing to catch a kids attention and make them want to purchase the toy. I don't look at it as being any different then using brightly colored artwork or a very large logo on the packaging. If it helps the toy sell then it's doing it's job!
