Gradius, R-Type, Thunder Force, Darius - These were among my favorite games when I was younger and it seems like these types of games have fallen off the map.

I tried the demo of R-type Dimensions on xbox live and wasn't too impressed, the updated graphics were very plain and the SNES R-type had better music (plus the fact that I have played R-type 1 &2 thousands of times doesn't help).

The last "new" side scrolling shooter I can can really remember enjoying a lot was Einhänder on PS-1.

Are there ANY good side scrolling shooters out there anymore?

I was wondering the same thing. Even vertical scrolling shoot'em ups seem to be rare. I noticed only Raiden 3 and 4, but only in Japan :(

Seems like most arcade style games vanished, only to be replaced with PC like games and casual games :(

Soldner-X on PSN is really good (the PC version was too). I have been hearing great things about the sequel as well. They just released a bundle of both games for $18. The PSN also has some classic R-Type games in the PSOne section.

Einhander was an excellent shooter. It's held up ok.

Einhander was rather fun, Insector X was hell in 16 bit form. IMy favorite was the top down M.U.S.H.A., still have it in fact. The last Top down shooter I can remember was for the Dreamcast, and didn't hold up well. Guess People expect quite a bit more for their games, and this Genre fell to the wayside beacuse of that.

Gradius V and R-Type Final are two greats and you can get them for pretty cheap on PS2.

There's a semi-healthy market in japan for fanmade shmups. There's some pretty amazing ones here:

    ABA Games

Not exactly super complex or anything, but they're worth checking out. Tumiki fighters, rRootage, and Parsec47 are all pretty intense and well designed bullet hell shooters.

There's also the entertaining "Warning Forever": Which is a kind of adaptive boss fighting Shmup where the bosses will change form depending on how you play, getting bigger, tougher, faster, and sprouting more and more guns in different places based on how you defeated their predecessors.

    Hikoza'n-CHI X - Games

EDIT: Important note - the above games are NOT recommended for those inclined to seizures or sensory overload

Aegis Wing on Xbox Live is good, four player fun.
    And it's free.

I think some people need to learn the true meaning of the side scrolling shooter.

It's not just Japan. Shooters are thriving pretty well on the pc in general.

The most recent console (if the DS can be considered a console) shmup i've played is Nanostray. I enjoyed it, but it is a bit lacking.

sweet, thanks! I had downloaded a different file. is there anyway to play the full game? I'm assuming the trial is only like one level. and that's a PRETTY game, by the way.

The trial version is three levels, there are full versions floating out on the net but I think you're technically supposed to pay for them so I wont post links.
