I would love that.
No. He's saving Optimus, not getting him killed.
IDW actually had the Matrix split in half and have a map on the inside showing the way to a mythical prehistoric group fortold to restore Cybertron.
You could not have missed the point more if you fired in the opposite direction and the point was on a different dimensional plain.
Smokescreen resembles Hotrod in virtually every fashion outside of paint job. He is identical in personality, heavily resembles his design, looks to have a similar storyline, the works. The Op is merely suggesting they not have beat around the bush, but as I explained, I'm all but positive they specifically changed his identity to avoid outright spoiling it.
Heck no. Hotrod was an incompetent punk. Smokescreen is the opposite. Well, maybe he's still a punk, but at least he's competent.
He's really no more competent than Hot Rod.
And Hot Rod was, just like everything else in G1, only really bad in the cartoon's universe. Everywhere else he's a cool guy who doesn't afraid of anything and a far more interesting character than Optimus himself. He's more complex, has had different spins on his character, and in IDW he's probably one of the best personalities.
Hot Rod can never exsist due to copywrite issues. Rodimus can on the other hand. But no I prefer him to be Smokescreen.
Why are people acting like a name change would ruin his character? The only thing different is the name, right? And comparing G1 cartoon hotstuff to Prime Smokescreen makes no sense.
Honeslty I just want to know what we should call Smokie if he becomes a Prime.
I shall call him what I've always called him: Shitsmear.
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD is it really THAT hard a concept to accept that maaaaaybe they ain't just reusin' the same old names for the same character types over and over again!? Or is bein' fresh really such an anathema to you now!?
And then you'd complain for NOT having those same 5 names over and over again.
Also, Smokescreen > Hot Rod/Rodimus. Let him be free of the taint of Rodimus and be his own character, dig?
Optimus was Orion Pax before coming a Prime, so maybe it's like becoming the Pope and you get a whole new name.
Maybe thats why they called him Smokescreen...because Hot Rod is unavailable. But I'm completely okay that's his name is Smokescreen.
To answer your question Puck is exactly what you asking. As I stated before Prime Smokescreen has about as much in common with G1 Hot Rod as I have with the Explosion Specialist Michael Bay,which is less than 0%.
And why can't people just be happy with one name or another,to those that want to change his name to Hot Rod that is your business, but I am perfectly happy with the name he has on the show named Smokescreen.
I'm fine with the name, I was just expecting more "eh" answers than flat out "no"s. Also, I wouldn't say TFP Smokes and G1 Rod are less than 0% alike. The head crest, the flashy alt mode, the hotblooded attitude, the "imma be Prime" thing. And again, makes no sense comparing the two. It's the same reason Prime defenders ask why you'd compare G1 WJ to TFP WJ or G1 Breakdown to TFP Breakdown (they say something like "well characters change and evolve").
While Smokescreen and Hot Rod share a whole mess of character traits, etc. and blah, blah, blah....
I think the main reason Smokey's NOT Hot Rodimus is because he won't be leader for more than an episode.
Let me break it down.
-Only a Prime can wield the Forge of Solus
-Optimus is in no shape to wield said forge
-Bestow title and Matrix to Smokescreen
-Smokescreen fixes up Optimus
-Optimus takes back Matrix
-Smokescreen dies (hopefully)
See, Smokescreen's name wasn't a metaphorical smokescreen for a Hot Rod-type character.
Oh wait, Optimus returned in G1 and reclaimed the Matrix from Rodimus as well. Oops. Oh well, at least Rodimus was leader for most of a season.
Don't like the idea. Prefer to see Hot Rod as a separate character.
I'm not entirely joking, either; if your theory is correct, then the name the showrunners chose is itself meaningful as a comment on their desire to obscure his character arc. Wouldn't surprise me if that's why they picked it.
"Sentinel Prime" might work for Smokescreen post matrix... After all Optimus Prime wasn't called anything remotely close to Optimus Prime before taking up the matrix... His name was "Orion Pax."
The only thing similar is that they both start with "O." Maybe if Smokescreen is to become a Prime it calls for a drastic name change as welll? If not I'd be fine with just Smokescreen honestly... But personally I think this entire thing is just a "smokescreen" and Optimus will remain leader.
Granted I haven't seen any spoilers so I don't really know. But it seems lik the sort of thing the Prime team would do. Dangle a fantastic change and suggest it and then never follow through. =P Don't get me wrong... I like Prime... But they do that a lot.
very well put, Split. Ya know he will
light Cybertron's Darkest hour
in the final episode, right?!!
I'm hoping this isn't gonna become another Wheeljack is Drift thread...
Separate names with a comma.
