I've been thinking about a alternative director for the Transformers movie franchise, and going by the reviews for the Avengers movie, I'm thinking that Joss Whedon is definitely a possibility.

It appears that Mr Whedon has the knack of making a film that pleases the original (in Avengers' case, Marvel) fandom and newcomers to that franchise. (Going by the current TF movies I was starting to think that was not possible).

He also appears to be able to direct actions scenes and include decent dialogue and a storyline that makes sense.

Other points in his favour -

    - He actually seems to understand his characters' personalities and motivations.

    - We get to know his characters, even the main villains.

    - He realises that one does not have to rely on toilet-humour to make something funny.

    - His approach to female characters is a bit different from Bay's. He makes it clear that they have intelligence, and are not merely eye-candy.

    - He would definitely find a way to include the Dinobots in his movies.
