Simple question. But a little background:

I am somewhat of a DVD collector. I have seen every episode of Dragonball Z which was aired in the US, and used to be a big fan. Having finished the cumbersome series some time ago I have been somewhat removed from it all. Yet it still holds a small part in my heart.

I have been getting back into anime lately, and I saw in this week's Best Buy sale advert that the first season of DBZ was being re-released with a $29.99 price tag. I like the idea of these DVD coming back out as season sets, and I heard there was some remastering done and options for Japanese audio with English subtitles.

So anyone out there know more about this, and plans for future releases? Anyone pick it up yet? Give me advice on this purchase.

I was a fan of the ocean group dub, even if it was edited. I never liked the replacement voice actors, so I never bought any DBZ DVDs before.

If this new boxed set has japanese audio with no censorship at all, and they intend to release future seasons like this, well, I will make it mine.

I know it has Japanese audio...not sure about the censoring though.

    That should be Funimation's work

Funimation is redubbing (using their VAs) The Vegeta saga and the first half of the Frieza saga uncut. Meaning that you'll see the episodes Saban skipped out on when they dubbed the Vegeta saga.

So if you want to see the Vegeta saga and the first half of the Frieza saga uncut, I say go for it. I believe (don't quote me as I don't own those episodes) that they should be dual language like all Funimation DBZ DVDs

That's all they are doing is Vegeta and the first half of Frieza?

What about the rest of the show?

These DVDs are pretty crappy reportedly. Unnecessarily cropped to 16:9, horrible DVNR, noticeable print damage, etc.

Yeah, the cropping alone is enough deter me from buying. Funimation just seems to fuck up when it comes to DBZ.

They've already done the rest, I've owned the Boo Saga on DVD since like 2002 or 2003

Funimation has already done 2nd half of the Frieza saga, The Android/Cell saga and the Boo Saga. Plus 9-10 of the OVAs

But not as boxed sets with Japanese audio uncut have they?

Also to the cropping issues. That kinda sucks, I saw some examples, some look like I could live with it, some look like "WTF were they thinking?" so I am a bit torn.

Yea Funi has released boxed sets from garlic jr. up to the end and im near positive they have the original japanese. This is just the Funi dubs of the Saiyan Saga in a boxed set. It is worth the money in my opinion.

Well, I've seen season one for 30 bucks everywhere. if this continues and I can get every season for $30, hell yeah, gonna do it. cropping be damned, this is likely the best we'll get at an affordable price.

I bought it yesterday myself. Haven't had much time to watch it, but getting 39 episodes for $30, I couldn't pass it up.

With that attitude, it's no wonder Funimation doesn't care if they do it right. People will buy it anyway.

i stopped watching dbz when i got married. at that time i had everything from the trunks saga up to like 2 tapes from the end. so basically i have from trunks till the end all uncut on VHS. and they r doing nothing but dusting up in a plastic container in the closet. along w/my super battle figures. i used to b an extreme DBZ fanboy
