They should take a page out of The Simpsons and just have two lights: red and yellow. :p

Hmm, no wonder why it seems green lights don't stay green for too long at certain intersections...

I drive a tractor trailer and there is a town in KY ( Nicholasville ) that has short yellows. It's hard to stop a big truck, and some lights will turn yellow and I can be doing the speed limit, and if I slam the brakes I'd probably lock up the wheels and slide around, but if I keep rolling it turns red before I get through it. It is a safety problem and there should be a law about a minimum yellow light time.

That's the rough thing. Most state's departments of transportation have a manual that is around 2 inches thick about traffic regulations and guidelines. While none of it is terribly enforceable, mostly it is based in common sense.

How yellow light timings should generally be calculated is based on average response time and the speed of the road. Unfortunately some city traffic engineers try and fly by the seat of their pants and adjust things as they see fit. Auto-red light cameras mess with the equation because once there is a dollar value attached to that, why not slip that timing a bit for some cash?

there is a minimum standard time for yellow lights but who sits there and counts the seconds. Officials take advantage of that and try to bring in revenues. Its a shame.

Sometimes will just barely make it through a yellow, and there will be someone right behind me going for it as well. Knowing they got the red light, but they said F it anyway.
