Somebody asked this over on Hisstank, and I'm assuming it has to do with trademark issues, but I honestly can't figure the specifics.

There's a new GI Joe figure. In 1990 he was Shockwave, now he's Shockblast. Seems a simple case of Hasbro losing a trademark, but they've been using Shockwave this year in TFA and for the Cybertron mini-con in 2005, so it would seem they have the name Shockwave back. So, why is Hasbro using Shockblast?

I know this is more of a Joe question, but thought somebody here might have some insight.

Possibly brand familiarity, or possibly something to do with where the previous Shockwave mark was used.

GI Joe's rival line, The Corps, was where the name was while the trademark was missing in action. Because The Corps resemble GI Joe, maybe there's some legalise that keeps the name from being utilized in that format. Because TF Shockwave is a big robot who turns into a laser cannon, tank, or whatever the Minicon was, he's further away so more "acceptable".

That or it is a conscious decision on Hasbro's part to make that character Shockblast to maintain the trademark on that name too.

They lost the trademark for a few years, made due, now they have it back.

Maybe they're just trying to keep both names now?
