I have a buyer from Italy asking about a high ticket items. I've seen some threads about not shipping to Italy but they're old. Does anybody have any more recent experiences?

Also, in those old posts several people claimed that Italy does not allow any shipping of toys not made of wood. Where can I officially find this info?

    Thanks.

I was going to make a topic on this earlier. Does anyone have a list of safe countries to mail stuff to? I was just recently asked to mail stuff to Brazil, Mexico and China

The list of prohibited items for shipment to Italy is found on the USPS site.

I don't know why this is true, but it is listed:

That's retarded. I always see these 'we don't ship to Italy' signs, and I used to think maybe the mafia had infiltrated the Italian post office or something.

Incidentally, when I visited Italy, it took a lot longer for the postcards I sent to arrive than those I sent from other locations.

from what i have read in multiple threads (and they may seem old, but truth endures) is that:

1.) The national postal system is as reliable as letting your infant nephew balance the books.
2.) buyers take advantage of #1 above.
3.) the lengthy shipping time encourages bad blood and disputes and it leads to buyers going to #2 to get an advantage
4.) With PayPal, no matter what you do as a seller, you are just as screwed or about to be by the buyer.

with all the negativity, it isn't worth it.
it's like selling fertilizer and ammonia bags to a guy who ain't a farmer and he wants truckloads...you are gonna get burned.

What about shipping by express. Does that offer you any protection?

Would still go through the Italian postal system though.

You can't circumvent Italian customs, but would something like FedEx,or DHL be better suited? For some reason or other i have this perception that UPS' would gouge particularly on 'customs clearnace charges'.

Certainly, i've had packaged shipped to me by DHL for a little less than they would've cost by USPS Express, and got them more quickly too.

...but i'm in a different European country than Italy.

Ah, the Italian Postal system. I lived in Italy for two years working as a Naval Postal Clerk at Sigonella and I'll tell you this: the Italian national Postal System is near legendary for its unreliability. Is the your buyer an Italian national?

I can't add any new info about the risks of shipping toys to Italy.

If you do decide to chance it, ship EMS and insure it for the full value of the package.

    What's the problem here ?

I buy really often from States, Canada etc.. without any problem. Italian postal system is not the best of world but actually it works fine.

i've shipped there a couple times, it was a pain, one was a dispute that got settled after it arrived there, the other was fine, i shipped them as collectibles instead of toys, don't know if it helped or not though
